EVERYBODY KNOWS the best time of the year for space-a travel and/or lodging is when school is in session and not much pressure is being put on military lodging. This is another vote for that idea. In January of this year we traveled from California to Tennessee by private vehicle. The first leg of the trip was to Tempe, AZ, to visit with family. After a fairly easy trip to El Paso, we had reserved a ground-floor room at Fort Bliss with two queen-sized beds, and all the amenities for $55 a night. We drove on the next day for San Antonio and got a room at Randolph Air Base there for two nights at $41.50. Why did we stay two nights? So we could rest up from the 600+ mile trip from El Paso, and see some more of San Antonio. Unfortunately it rained cats-and-dogs and all we got was the rest, but that was okay. Don't know when the Joint Base will be in place in San Antonio but hope the Air Force keeps the lodging concession! We went on to Houston and stayed two nights with family, leaving the third day for Little Rock Air Base, where our room there was comfortable as always. We arrived home in the early afternoon the next day, three months and a week after leaving home. We'll make the turn-around in a few months and hope to have the same luck - before school is out! |
