Bob Jones is spot on. When you cross into a state where you might consider spending the night, pickup one of the hotel discount coupon books from the racks in each Rest Area and check for motel discounts. These are lower than inter-net rates. We use them all the time.

Check the AF & Navy Inns on the DoD Net.

While enroute, we've checked and made reservations from our car on I-95 w/ our cell.

Tough to beat quality & cost, though not always directly on I-95.

If you are looking for longer stays, try the MWR facilities and TLFs. Remember too, there are some USCG stations on the waters edge:

Ken, You might check at the Welcome Centers in each State for the magazine type publication that advertises discount rooms along I-95. Might find some good prices there. Bob

Ken,
We have stayed at a number of military installations on or near I-95 between D.C. and Miami. They have all been quite acceptable, i.e., clean, secure and priced right.
They have been Oceana NAS, Norfolk NAS, Shaw AFB, Charleston AFB, King's Bay NSB(GA.), Jacksonville NAS, Patrick AFB and Homestead ARB.
We also stayed at the Cherry Point MCAS (N.C.) a good while back. The accommodations there were lacking, however, they were in process of upgrading the facility at that time. Thus, I would be unable to provide any current input on that facility.
One thing you may want to do before you head down FL. way. Check the weather reports. We have had rather miserable weather, unseasonably windy & cold, thus far this year. Not at all what the "snowbirds" would expect.

Last year, my husband and I enjoyed a night at South Carolina's Santee State Park , just off I 95 at Exit 98, near the town of Santee . Their normal rates for a two bedroom, fully furnished cabin with kitchen facilities run $80-$120 per night, but between now and March 31st they are offering any cabin for $60. They are well worth it, and they are a little different from a standard motel. Their website is: http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/535.aspx
