Sheila;
I am the Range Manager for the largest range on Camp Atterbury, which is approximately 12 miles south of the main base area. My range handles everything from Tank/Bradley/HMMWV gunnery tables as well as a dismounted platoon battle course.

Hey Mike,

Where do you work on Atterbury? Just wondering, I lived in Scottsburg, recruited for the Indiana National Guard-put many soldiers into Atterbury units. Nice place you have there in Columbus. Bet we know some of the same people.

Warm Regards,
Sheila

I travel from Iowa to SC and back. Attybury is half way so stop each time. Never an issue in getting lodging although always during the week. I would assume weekends can be tough. After hours you pick up key at gate. Also site for Indiana NG OCS program to add to weekend woos of Space A. 812=526-1128 for reversations. Always arrive late/leave early so not sure of facilities.

Bob;
I can check on Monday when I return to work on how exactly a SPAT could reserve a room, I don't know the answer to your question, but I will be happy to find out the answer to share here.

Mike, to get a BOQ room at Camp Atterbury does one to go to Billet Scheduling? I'm unfamiliar with the term so I wasn't sure.

Unfortunately, getting the cabins at Atterbury is like pulling teeth. You can only reserve them. To register for April, you have to do it March 1st, etc. This is what I was told when I inquired about it one day when I was getting fuel at the fuel point. I work onboard base.

Atterbury has a PX, although limited in things as it's not the normal size PX most of us are use too. Chow hall is run by a contract, so would be a higher than normal price to eat. They have a Subway on the base. Also an All Ranks Club, serves breakfast, lunch, dinner. Chow is good there, a little pricey but I feel it's worth it.

With the large number of mobilizing/demobilizing troops (all services), billeting may not be available, best to call in advance, and office is only open during duty hours.

The MUTC in Butlerville, IN sounds somewhat like the Carville National Guard Training Site run by the Louisiana Army National Guard. It was the former Hansen's disease Hospital site which was operated by the Federal Government. The Guard acquired it, did a lot of renovating, new building, located some units there. There is also a Youth Challenge Training School as well as a Federal Job Corps School located there. When Hurricane Katrina hit, half of the Headquarters of the Louisiana National Guard relocated there and the rest at Camp Beauregard. It too is located in a very isolated location, but the rooms are very nice, located in a building called the "Hotel", I think cost around $40.00 a night. I have it posted on my National Guard Facilities that offer Space-A Lodging (available on this board above on John D' Space A Pages)

Agree with Rebecca. MUTC is in the middle of nowhere. Camp Atterbuty is another possibility in the area and only about 10 minutes off I65. Camp Atterbury has some very nice cabins that will sleep up to 8!

Bob, I'm don't have any knowledge of the lodging opportunities at Muscatatuck, but be aware that it is in a fairly isolated area, with very few amenities on base. If I had to guess, I would say Wright-Patterson, Dayton Ohio would be the closest Space-A location.

Interestingly, the grounds and buildings of Muscatatuck are what comprised the former Indiana facility for the mentally ill. The mental health facility closed quite a few years ago, and the patients now participate in "group home" programs closer to their communities.

After the facility closed, the Indiana National Guard established the facility for urban warfare training. They also have a program whereby they assist troubled youth with completing their education, and subsequently join the military.

We drove through there this past summer. I thought it was interesting, but again, I caution, there is not much there.

In the past I've used the Virginia State Military Reservation, Camp Pendelton ( in VA Beach ). It was always well maintained. For others I just Google the state (Camp, Reservation, USPFO) of interest. Many are beautifully located and I've noted a couple have SPAT flights in and out too.

I had to wait for the USA to best Canada in hockey tonight before posting this. Reading the March 2010 The American Legion Magazine I read an article titled "Urban warfare in a rural setting." It's operated by the Indiana National Guard in Butlerville, Indiana. It sounds like a great training facility though I've never heard of the base. Does anyone know of lodging opportunities for retirees on this base?
