We tried to get lodging at Hickam for BFB, the folks in the lodging office were less than friendly and we never did get any, so just stayed at the Navy Lodge, paid more but like our room and location.

When we were at the Hale Koa in January I was told they only charge the government $199 for the troops to stay there when Hickam is full. A real bargain.

That must be why my granddaughter, a newly-assigned second balloon reporting to Hickam today, was told that quarters were not available for her. Instead, they made reservations for her in the Hale Koa. Tough, huh?

Cherry,
We stayed at the lodging near the Officer's club a year and a half ago and were very pleased. The rooms were not updated but our room was larger than ones we have stayed in near the lodging office. What we liked the most was the location. It was just a short walk to the Wright Brothers restaurant (I think that was the name of it)where we had a very nice brunch each morning. The walk to the restaurant was on a beautiful walking path overlooking the water.

Having just completed a Hawaiian space-a get-away, I'm convinced that Hickam has the distinction of having both the best and the worst military lodging on the island. As noted, the facilities closest to the lodging office seldom seem to be available and, unless one lucks out and is assigned one of the excellent DV digs, you're apt to be shuffled off to the generally run down buildings near the officers club (for a maximum 3-day stay!). Consequently, back-up reservations at Pearl Harbor are highly recommended.

Cherry,

Hope you didn't get the ones with the shared bath. Besides shared bath they don't have much in the way of amenities.

Go over to Pearl if you can to Arizona Hall, (808)421-6113, and see what they have available.... $50 a nite but they have many bldgs and the rooms sure beat those on the Hickam side...

The Hickam lodging office informs us that "a group" is coming in on Sunday, March 7 for a week, and therefore temporary lodging will be difficult to get during that period, especially in the buildings located near the center of the base. (We were allowed to reserve--for 2 nights only even though 3 nights are normally allowed--at a location off the beaten track near the Officers Club.)

To ask to extend, you must call the lodging office between 0545 and 0600 to see if that is possible, and if you get a go-ahead then the sponsor must promptly come in person to the office to do the necessary paperwork.
