This is a better price and your breakfast is included. The last time I was at Mildenhall AFB there was a note on the phone area wall in the terminal that stated "stay a way from the Bird in the Hand Hotel" But I went there anyway and they were really right about staying away from that hotel. They recommended the Bird in Hand, so some of us shared a cab and went there. Later at dinner, we discovered that several other couples had ignored the "advice" and called or went to the Mildenhall base lodging office directly. All of them were accomodated in nice rooms for less than half the price we were paying (so we changed lodging after the first night). At that time, the Bird in Hand rooms seemed very small, old, and worn - more like an old Motel 6 than "British lodging." However, the attached pub and restaurant was a popular hangout. At Mildenhall, we scored a newer 1-bedroom room with a pull-out sofabed in the living room and a kitchenette. Lesson learned? Call the Mildenhall lodging office as soon as you know you'll be landing there and try to reserve a room by phone. Sometimes they don't release available rooms until late afternoon, and you may have to be at the lodging office to get the remaining Space-a rooms. As a backup, when it seems a lot of people are waiting for Mildenhall rooms to be released, you can also call Lakenheath and reserve a room there IF the free base shuttle can still get you there that evening. Then if you get a room at Mildenhall, you can politely cancel your room at Lakenheath. Both lodging reception desks personnel were very nice and tried hard to get everyone a room.   Jack T. At least you can put on blankets. However, if you can't open the window because it may fall out, makes it hard to get cool. I just had a look at Google Earth. When I put in RAF Mildenhall, on my map, the red pin point is the lodging office. (Way better than hiking to the other gate!) You can also leave the Base (to the Bird in Hand) thru an adjacent gate (25 yds). Don/David: Mittleton Hall (former O'Club and VOQ) is one of the buildings under rehab...the non-opening windows indeed, made it very difficult to sleep there in warm weather! I do know that when I was there about four years ago you had to walk way down to the Tea Bar, go out a gate, then enter another and walk back to the Lodging Office. John said in his post (in part): Bird in Hand is nearly as close as the lodging office is to the Pax Terminal! If the config was as you said a few months back, that would not be the case. If it is, as I saw it four years ago, it would be. One of their building is close for renovation but when we were there, there was not much activity going on and they had plenty of rooms available. Hope you have a better experience this year. Initially, they put us in a building under reconstruction. Has the construction ended? The room was about 85 degrees (in April) and had a note on the window to not open it as it would fall out. We are planning a return trip this April and hope for better quarters. I checked at MHZ lodging, talked to the NCOIC,(another Buckeye) he said you can reserve up to 3 days at a time. Call them ASAP, they had room starting the 23rd. I was just there last month and there were plenty of quarters available. The lodging staff is very professional and will do everything they can to put you into lodging. There are not much activity going on around mildenhall these days. Also Lakenheath is about 5 or 6t miles away and lodging is available there also. Wish we were there with you.
