I second Mr. Standage's comments. Up at Schofield Barracks where I was stationed, we had a fine film of red dust show up every morning on our kitchen counters, and anything else horizontal, no matter how much you cleaned up (and my wife was very fastidious in that regard). Of course having the windows open without A/C (didn't really need it up there "on the hill") didn't help but that's the price you paid. There was a bumper sticker we saw constantly that said "Lucky you live paradise" or something like that. Sometimes you had to remind yourself of that..... |

The salt air and humidity at Bellows will rust brand new appliances in just a few months. The enviornment takes a heavy tool on everything on the island, and Bellows cabins right on the water are no exception.
We have friends who live inland just a few miles from the Aloha statium, and their pristine refrig and freezer looked like a rust bucket after just two years.
When I lived at Ft Shafter, my new carpets got permanently stained by the "red dust" after just a year (I vacuumed regularly too).
It's just tough to live in paradise. Don't try and stay at Bellows if you can't stand some bugs, rust, and sand. I wouldn't trade the best room at Wakiki for the opportunity to rise in the early morning and be able to walk almost a mile in either direction on the beach at Bellows and hardly see a soul. The sand is almost as soft as walking on foam and the water is like wading in the best bubbly around.

We stayed there last summer. They tell us our cottage was renovated, but the ceiling fan and TV mount were rusty, wood was deteriorating, etc. They clarified it was renovated, but perhaps not recently. The site is a jewel, so hopefully the renovations will improve these great location cottages! Being a family of 5 we would have required 2 rooms at the Hale Koa. |

I checked in to an un-renovated backrow cabin yesterday for a 4 day stay. The office said they are booked solid through May. I snagged my room reservation about 10 days ago by calling daily for a cancellation.
On the 19 Jan 2010, 52 units were taken out of commission for extensive renovation. Most of them will be back in the inventory by 31 May, until then, at Bellows, things will be tight.
Wx is breezy but warmer and more sunny than what I was seeing back in WA!
Local public school kids are on spring break all week!
