Earl - His name is CW5 Scott Fink (that's kinda hard name not to remember if you saw it on his name tag) I will tell him of the occurance that you had, and if was him, he will remember. Thank you very much for the info on FEW AFB, especially about the AC in rooms and the ability to eat in the dining facility - I'm sure this will interest other retirees who may want to visit the base.

Mervin, I meet your WO friend at FE Warren last summer.

While we were walking and looking at the nice homes (old FG officers quarters close to the parade field), I noticed he was a Army WO.

We talked for a long time and he gave me two WY Army NG coins.

If you see him tell him I have the coins and "thanks."

Nice folks. Nice wife and kids. Enjoyed talking with him.

Harold, don't know what building you stayed in at FE Warren.

All the lodging buildings have ac there.

Was there heading out to Alaska and on return trip from Alaska (May & July 2009).

Retirees can eat in the dining facility. They more than welcome you. Dining facility is across the street from the bowling alley. Adjacent to the fire station. Breakfast is great. All meals are great.

The main lodging office is located close to the base library and indoor pool. (sorry don't kow the name of the street). There are a few buildings that have rooms on the office side of the parade field and also more buildings on the other side of the parade field.

There are VIP quarters (small cabins/houses) and in other older FG officers quarters.

But, had ac the week I was there.

Phyllis - I assume, because I know you live in Gainesville, TX you will be taking the route I-35/I-135 north to I-70, then north on I-25 to get to Mt Rushmore. John is right, Ellsworth is the closest to Mt Rushmore, but getting there you have a choice of places to stay, FWE being one of them. Something you may consider, and I haven't stayed there, but visited the place quite a few years ago is Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center which is located in Guernsey, WY. It's located about 15 miles east of Exit 92, I-25. From there, you could even take US 85N, then either US 18E to US 385N To Custer NP & Mt Rushmore, or even further north, Rte 16E to Custer NP, Mt Rushmore. I don't know what the facilities are like at Camp Rapid in Rapid City, or Fort Meade near Sturgis, SD (National Guard Bases), but they are another option to Ellsworth if it is unavailable. Camp Guernsey, Camp Rapid and Camp Meade are all listed in my National Guard Training Sites List if you are interested. Don't know what time you would be leaving Gainesville, but about 5 hours away there is also Nickell Hall in Salina, KS which is located almost at the junction of I-135 & I-70. Good luck on your trip to SD, we have traveled that area many times, and I stil would like to go back. I especially like traveling the US and State Routes off the Interstate system.

Anyone visiting FEW should not miss driving Happy Jack Road and stopping at Vedauvoo west of town. Fantastic scenery and never, ever a crowd. If more time, try the Snowy Range just west of Laramie.

Thanks guys. I knew Ellsworth was the best bet, but since we can't make reservations till 3 days out, I wanted to have a back up plan. I will be calling them a 1:01am central time three day out.

Phyllis:

Ellsworth AFB is the closest base to Mt Rushmore (25 miles?). Have stayed there several times...outstanding facility!

Happy Travels, John

Phyllis - Francis E Warren Air Force Base is within the Cheyenne, WY city limits. I have a friend, fellow Command Chief Warrant Officer Five who works for the WY Army National Guard on the base. I have never been there before, but have seen the signs passing through Cheyenne. I have always told him that I will visit him one day, and that may be this June when I drive from New Orleans to Denver Airport. Since it looks like the Buckley AFB Inn won't be completed by that date, I may just drive up to Cheyenne and try to spend the night at FEW AFB (looks like it's about 107 miles from Denver Airport), then drive back in the morning to drop vehicle off and fly back home. I think I will email my friend to find out about the lodging at FEW AFB.

I do not see this listed in my book, where is it? We are planning a trip to Mt. Rushmore and wonder if this would be a good place to look for some rooms?

Howdy: The rooms do not have air conditioning, so, hot summers can be a challenge. The good news, bad news is that the wind blows almost all of the time so you can open windows and get a breeze. Be sure to visit the museum.

Jerry, its been several years. We use to travel Rapid City to Colorado Springs staying the FEW. The facilities are the oldest military post west of the mississippi or something like that. The quarters we have had are very roomy. We found eating on base in the evening challenging. Bowing ally has good burgers. I would stay there any time.
