I guess persistence is the key to success with Ramstein VOQ. After trying all day Tuesday by email to get a reservation for Wed, I arrived at Ramstein Pax terminal from Mainz at 330 PM with no reservation. I called the VOQ, and was told at first no rooms, but in the middle of the conversation, the clerk said he had a room for us in Bldg 303. So we checked in and had a room for the night, after many attempts. JC

In response to the post ref rms being out of order due to roof leadks. Shortly after initial opening in Jul '09, there was a water leak but it was from a problem with a water pipe not a roof leak. Result was about 10 rms (out of 350) being down for a period of time. Not a significant impact on overall rm availability. Any hotel operation will have a number of rms down at a given time for various maintenance issues (plumbing, electrical, etc.) KMCC VQ has not experienced any significant rm issues since they have opened. Broken panel in the skylight was the result of contractors breaking the glass while installing a new panel -- no impact on rm availability. Also, when gathering "intel" on issues/concerns within any hotel operation, be cautious of taking "informed" employee's word as gospel, as often they are simply passing along their assumptions and not reality. When in doubt, ask the manager.

My personal experience has shown me that once a project starts out snakebit it usually stays snakebit dispite best efforts to correct it.

typical situation when maintenance is not important but business is - all suffered and mistrust and eventual closure are always the end result

Diane writes, "A lot of things going wrong."

Suggestion: put this into Latin (it looks so nice that way) and engrave it over the entrance of the Ramstein edifice. That has been the story from Day 1 beginning untold years ago, and apparently may be destined to continue forever.

If it weren't so sad (and expensive), it would make a truly funny saga.

We were there in Oct and were told the roof leaked into one whole side of rooms and went down many floors, making them uninhabitable. Also, while we were there the skylight in the atrium broke and sent glass all over the lobby. It sounds like the quality control was missing. A lot of things going wrong.

Bldg 2408 is the only Bldg currently being renovated (sprinkler system). 2409 is operational. However, both are primarily used for long-term TDY guests. Very few space-A personnel lodged in these Bldgs. KMCC VQ added 350 rms. However, Sembach (460 rms) was closed. Lodging is also converting a number of shared baths throughout the 1,400 rm operation into private baths. Couple that with a steady flow of TDY personnel (heavy TDY flow currently) and it leaves fewer rms for space-A travelers.

Since bldg 2408 and 2409 are under renovation, there is a shortage of those rooms. don.t know when the renovation will be completed.

With all the traffic going thru Ramstein every day for the war zones, I can understand why they are almost always full. The three times we went thru Ramstein in the last six month, we were always able to obtain quarters in the new hotel. A great placed to stay while awaiting transportation to whenever you are going. Keep on trying. Happy Travels.

I don't understand why lodging is so tight at Ramstein after building the multi million dollar complex right next to the terminal. I have been trying to get quarters since yesterday morn at 0530 by email, and they didn't provide any answer until 1900, and it was negative. The same thing has happened the last 3 times thru here. You would think with the additional rooms they would be able to accomodate everyone with no fuss. JC

I returned to lodging shortly after 1900 hoping that something had changed since being rebuffed at 1800. Seems that everyone decided that night to take advantage of their reservations so I headed back over to the terminal. Luck had changed and there was a flight to Gander > Charleston. Though I was looking for Andrews or Dover I decided I had better start moving before I was rolled over by the PCSing early starts. There were probably 20 kids on the plane so it seems the rush is beginning but they didn't interrupt my sleep though not as good as the Q I slept well.

Last night I was first in the stand-by line for a room. Alas, there were no rooms for couples at any of the KMC facilities. I still had a car so Landstuhl and Vogelweh would not have been a problem. There were rooms for singles but I don't know how many.

For the next week there doesn't seem to be any lodging available at the KMC facilities as there is a large scale readiness exercise going on at Ramstein. I stood in the stand-by line at 1800 of about 15 folks and only half got rooms. The rooms came from no-shows and cancellations. There were no rooms for families with children, limited for couples, and all singles were accomodated.

James,

The link below shows a map with the locations of the HI hostels in Germany. Looks like there's about 4 HI Hostels within a 25 mile radius of Ramstein.

You can make three days of reservations at once, but you can only call the day before. If you want to arrive Wednesday, call Tuesday a.m. as early as possible. The family lodging will accommodate six, technically speaking (double bed, twin beds, sofa bed) so I would ask for lodging for six people and bring a sleeping bag. There is a full kitchen, fully stocked, plus washer/dryer. If you can't get lodging -- and I'm guessing due to PCS season you won't be able to -- try the hostels; they are very family friendly and come with a full breakfast. Your children will be at a reduced rate; small kids may be free. Good luck!

The lodging facility is a first class establishment. The best military facility We have stayed in. The facility has a mall in it. From what I was told, the whole military community goes to the mall on weekends. We have spent a few days there coming and going to England during November and January. Due to the recent activity at Ramstein, lodging is hard to obtain in the new facility but if you are able to get it you will enjoy the facility. Happy Travels.

My wife and I were at Ramstein in May, 2008. The lodging was still under construction. I assume everything is finished.

Looked like it was going to be an awesome building once it was completed. I understand that there were suppose to be 800 rooms in the complex. Is that true? We would like to know more about what you think of it now that it has been completed.

The new inn is difficult to obtain due to the present situation going on at Ramstein. If you want to wait around for quarters until late in the afternoon and only get one night you can normally get into the new inn, otherwise, they will put you in the older quarters cross the base.Happy Travels.

One couple did, don't know about the other two. We were put in Bldg. 304 which is a room with private bath for $39 but got 3 nights. The exercise walking back and forth from KMCC is good for us. There is a shuttle but we like the exercise.

Was able to make Space-A reservation at Ramstein for 3 nights 24 hours in advance of arrival. Arrival was on March 16. Three other couples on the flight who did not have reservations also got rooms.
