Danny, You are correct about the . or the dash. It was a typo. Neal did catch it!!! I checked Neal's location and it is right on top of Billeting-probably on top of the one room office in the building. Thanks for watching. |

Dakota, you posted: "Can you use coordinates for Camp Rell? 41.3323N 72-1867W using the decimal system." I'm sure you meant to place a DECIMAL POINT in the longitude instead of a DASH! Neal, are you sure you have the correct location marked now? Maybe you caught the typo in Dakota's posting. |

Hi Neal, Can you use coordinates for Camp Rell? 41.3323N 72-1867W using the decimal system. That is the parking in front of Billeting. I was there about 18 months ago. The Billeting Office is close to the center of the camp. I did not bring up your map and look at the placemark. If you can't use coordinates, send a private email and I will bring up your map and try to help you that way. Thanks for all your work!!! |

camp rell niantic ct. Named for the present governor. They change the name every time they elect a new one (the last one is in the can). A nice place to stay and cheap too. |

Thanks Jerry, I found it this morning. Mine is already set up for the decimal system because I was using that for the GPS/Google Earth project for Leland. I knew it was there but my mind seems to be going away faster than my body. That scares me!! Thanks again!!! |

The coordinates for the MAIN GATE of Hanscomb AFB (in the DECIMAL format) are: 42.461724 -71.268445 In Degrees, Minutes & Seconds they are: 42° 27' 42.2058" -71° 16' 6.4014" Hanscom Billeting 1/4 mile away from the main gate. Pass through the main gate and turn right on Kirtland Street. Hope this helps. |

Leland, I looked at Mr Pinster's coordinates. I think that he is also using the degree-minute-second process. Do you still have the instructions for Google Earth and how to change the system? Mine is still set up for decimals. Maybe some Garmin's work with degrees but the POI system does not. I will send him an email tomorrow and try to explain it. Converting his coordinates using the 60 to 100 rule brings it close. I agree about the gates. I tried three different gates at Hanscom and found the west one on the north side the best and it appears to be closest to billeting and the PAX area. Leland, thanks for your work with this and all your practical comments on the board. Happy Trails!! |

This is a continuing problem that has been described many times in the past. The maps used by the GPS navigation devices have no way of knowing which gates are open at which times or, indeed, if there even are gates at some locations. The only solution I have come up with is to add the coordinates for the 24/7 gate to the POI list and then suggest that folks use that as a waypoint enroute to the terminal or billeting (or wherever). |

About Hanscom: I think this is the problem: The base is big enough to have several gates. Some are closed and some are only open days. If the post were open I bet the GPS would take me to the lodging easily. The settings I gave will take you as described in on the base web site. You will exit from 95 at exit 31 B and following the road until the sign for Hanscom which has you making a right turn to cross the road (because you can not make a left) and then follow that road which runs into the gate. The coordinates I gave are those of a business about 200 m after you turn onto that road which runs into the gate. I tried using the coordinates at the gate but this took me of 95 at a different exit. I hope this is more clear than my first post. Neal's websites are wonderful. I hate to think how much time Neal has donated to all of us. All I can say is thank you very much. |

Dakota Ray/others: I have had great success with those that Leland published. We did Europe last year and they worked like a charm. I recently traded my Lexus for a different model with a nav system (would have stayed with GPS but Lexus made me an offer...) In any event, to input POIs to my vehicle I can visit their website and input addresses, make a couple of clicks and they are automatically sent to the car. My problem with Leland's is separating OCONUS from CONUS. Obviously I am not planning on taking my car overseas. I do want the CONUS POIs. If Neal's are set up like Leland's (.csv) I can probably download them to the Lexus website and get them into my auto. I'll be experimenting and will keep everyone posted. Kudos to both Neal and Leland...what a great job! |

Neal, the marker for Ft Riley, KS is about 6 miles north of the installation. Here are the coordinates for Ft Riley main gate and billeting office: Ft Riley Main Gate: 39.0438 -96.7722 Ft Riley Billeting Office: 39.0674 -96.7850 Thanks for your hard work and keep on polishing this gem of information for SPATS, Neal! |

Hi M. Craig Pinsker-- What Points of interest are you using. Are you using some address published from a web site, Lelands GPS download 6 or above, etc? My Garmin also took me to the wrong gate but it was an easy drive to the left to get to the correct gate. Lodging was great and I had a good time at the Club. I don't disagree with you. I was through there using a Garmin in October of 2008 but only had minor problems. I do think that if you use Lelands download, it will take you to the correct gate and also lodging if you add a second location after the gate. Any other inputs that you can provide will be appreciated by Leland-I think!! Happy Trails!!! |

I don't know if this fits under directions to base but: I have just been to Hanscom AFB near Boston. Great lodging but GPS units take you to the wrong gate or take you through parts of the base that are closed, even if you mark the location after you get to lodging or a location right outside the gate. My Garmin will not even take you to the proper exit from I-95. I have been told that other GPS units cause the same problem. Here is what I found that works. Go the the following: N 42 28.418' W 071 15.194' This is a business on the road to the correct gate. Continuing on the on the same road will take you into the AFB, 100 m from lodging. |

Jack, I had only a very minor input into Leland's GPS system and project because I had some coordinates. I do understand the GPS program (I think)!! Used a prototype as I was retiring. Google Earth is mostly a computer process. You seem to have some thought process that I am not sure of. Explain more if you can. If you have a computer, you can download and work with Neal's project and his inputs. Are you trying to share the info into another piece of equipment like a GPS, etc??? If it is into the GPS, a problem would be back to the accuracy which started Leland project. I do appreciate the work that Neal and Leland did. It is "beyond the call of duty". THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU!!! |

I am not sure how that would work. I will try to do some research on it to see if it is possible. If we have any experts out there on how to import something from Google Maps into a navigation system they can jump in any time. I would think that each brand of navigation system might have its own requirements. |

Neal great job. Two I noticed missing though are Barksdale AFB LA and Grissom ARB IN which is near Peru Indiana. Also for your information concerning Ft Custer near battle Creek. There is a small BX (shoppete type store) at the Michigan Air Gurad base which is about 2 miles east of Ft Custer. According to the BX manager there are plans to build a new store at Ft Custer as well. Hopefully it will be open in the fall of 2010. |

Neal: Add an "atta boy" from me to the others you've received. Glad to hear that you plan to add Lat/Lon coordinates to your base info (I'm still old school!). A suggestion, if only one set of coordinates are provided per base, how about doing so for the installation's 24-hour (always open) gate. |
