Hi Walt,

I want to compliment you for sharing!

It is about 3 hours from my home and I would like to combine it with a trip to Yosemite. A trip to Lake Tahoe and down Highway 395 will also work.

I have had a couple of private emails also sharing info about the general area and impressions of lodging and the center.

I hope to stay there in the next 9 months and will share my experiences when I do.

I think that is a "unique" area that appeals to only some people and so it is not for everyone. I did not know about it until you made your post.

Happy Trails!!

Sorry-I did't check the date on the pub from military Living but I'm sure they would have the latest on their display rack-the website (along with the subsequent comments/info) should provide the info you seek--honestly,I didn't think my comment would stir up so much interest!! Hope you all have a safe and fun visit!!!

My husband is stationed here right now, though he is TAD to Afghanistan. If you have any questions let me know. I stayed at the lodging before we moved here, it is nice. The elevation is about 6700 I believe. There is little to do on base unless you like hiking and outdoors. Base is located in an isolated location. The chalet (place to eat) is open only at certain hours, I would have to check on those, but the food is excellent! There is a gas station on base cash only. Last I heard it was way more expensive then the most expensive in town! There is a pack station down the way a bit that has great mountain riding if you enjoy that. The base is located on national forest land so hiking around is permitted. There are a few little towns about 30 mins north and Bridgeport is to the south. Gardnerville NV is about 1 hour and Carson and Reno are a bit farther. Right now it is a bit cold! Spring is beautiful, and so is fall. Winter is cold cold! and summer is hot. Tahoe is about 1 and a half hours from the base itself. If you have any questions or are coming to visit and would like some help, feel free to contact me.
Summer is the best time to visit because the small towns to the north are open. There are some excellent places to eat. If you like fishing there is the walker river, and topaz lake, there are some other lakes around but I don't know what they are called.

Dakota,

You are right. I forgot, there is a great "lodge" they call it, that has excellent food and a gorgeous view. It is right there on base too.

Summer time is lovely there. It is high in elevation (6500 feet) so it is mild mid-August. When we were there, (recently) it was busy year around. Good luck.

Hi John and SPATS,

I just got through to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

I did talk to a lady and I am not sure that she was all that "lovely" (maybe Europe does that to people or you have some phone that gives photos??). She indicates that their phone systems goes to the "remote access code" message and then to a busy signal.

Basically the info that John and the websites gave you is correct. The phone number is correct at 760-932-1487.

The info that I got--Basically three types of rooms-double bed for $35, two beds or VIP. I did not ask about rates for other than 1 double bed.

She indicated that they like reservations instead of walk-ins. The hours are 7 AM to 1600 and after that time a folder is given to the duty desk for check-ins--I would guess no walk-ins after 1600??

There is a all member club that serves drinks, pizza, hamburgers, etc. She indicates the view is great??

She did indicate that their busiest time is actually during the winter because of the specialized training and that summer is a good time to try Space A.

I am interested in this location for 1 or 2 nights and will try to keep you posted.

Again, If anyone else has stayed there or has info about it, please post.

Thanks to Walter, Mervin, Mr Hartje, Jeb and Kristine. Your info is right on.

I love that area and with a trip through Yosemite, it would complete a very enjoyable travel/exploring package.

Happy Trails!!

Hi John,

Thanks for the confirmation.

It is interesting how you can call and get someone and I can't. I just tried twice again in the last 30 minutes (since your last post) and get the same ringing and request for a remote access code. It is 1420 on Friday as I write this so the time should not be a problem.
I am using 760-932-1487!!

Maybe you can call and get some info and pass to the board members?

As far as amenities (per the web site):

"All rooms include satellite TV, DSN phone, coffee pot and refrigerator. Wi-Fi is available in the TQ Lobby." Some rooms also have kitchens.

Dakota,

I called the number and spoke to a lovely young lady so the number is valid. Office hours are typically 0700-1600 - I presume at least Mon-Fri.

John,

Tried that number several times and I do not get an answer!! It rings about 10 times and then asks for a remote access code.

I thought that the Military Living book may have more current and accurate info.

I will look for the book at the BX and try to get a different number for contact.

Hi Walt,

Interesting!!!

I have the Military Living--Temporary Military Lodging Around the World Booklet.
Mine is fairly current with a copyright date of 2008. Mine was also put out by Military Living but the Training Center is not included.

Was there any important info-how to make reservations, costs, amenities, etc.

I will look at the BX at McClellan when I am there next time. Do you know the publication date or the exact title of the book??

I am extremely interested in this Training Center and will pass info if I get any.

My husband was last posted here for 4 years. It is actually considered Bridgeport, California. There are few places to stay but a beautiful location. If you were looking for a great drive this is it and you should also tour Lake Tahoe (only about an hour or so away). Sorenson's Resort is a lovely place to stay with an excellent restaurant. Topaz Lodge is decent and has a nice view. Genoa, Nevada, the first town settled in Nevada hasn't changed much and you should hit the oldest bar in the state for a drink (about an hour and 15 minutes or so). The base itself probably doesn't have a whole lot to offer. There is a small mini mart and otherwise these folks are very busy training for Afghanistan. The terrain in Bridgeport is very similar to the terrain in Afghanistan so they are busy busy right now. Happy travels.

We passed a military place out there last year on the Sonora Pass Rd. Looked like it was a Marine training grounds of some type. We had driven out there from Reno. Is that the same place we're talking about here? it was kind of "rugged" looking so I didn't think there'd be a place to stay there.

My wife and I stayed there last year. The lodging was nice, the club was great (awesome views) and very similar to Yosemite NP complete with streams, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and beautiful scenery. Be advised that this facility is located high in the Sierra Nevada’s mountains so altitude could be a problem. My lasting impression is that the Marines stationed there are all business and what a duty station! Any other particulars please contact me.

Yes-I have been there-but while on AD in 1963 or 64-spent the entire 10 days out in the wide open spaces under the care and nurture of the gung-ho (and well acclimated) NCOs-we were instructed to bring ONLY fatigues for the training but a kindly LT offered to lend me and 4-5 others some civvies and a very welcome ride into Reno for a very welcome non-C-rations meal(I recall being too tired to do anything else)--I'm sure a retiree would find it much more relaxing and enjoyable!!

Hi Walter,
Have you been to the MC Mountain Warfare Training Center. I love the drive from L.A. to Lake Tahoe via Highway 395!!

Just like Mervin, I remember some posts about it but I can not find them now. I seem to remember some comments about being somewhat rustic, isolated, etc.
I did forget about the previous posts and this was a good reminder.

Rustic, isolated, etc could work for me especially when combined with a trip through Yosemite.

Has anyone on the board stayed there and could you again share any real life experiences. I can read what is on the net so don't bother with the usual links unless you feel they are unique.

Thanks in advance!!!

Walter, I had mentioned this facility on one of my previous post. As far as I can tell, it's not mentioned on any lodging list. A Marine Corp retired member emailed me with the info to see if I wanted to put it on my National Guard Lodging List, but because it was Marine Corp, I elected not to. I sent the info to to Neal Floyd to see if he wanted to include it on his Space-A Lodging Google Map (CONUS). The web site for the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center is http://www.mccsmwtc.com/index.html. Looks like it would be a nice scenic place to stay.
