We will try to get down there in June. We still have water in our basement. No heat no hot water. Washer dryer and freezer are destroyed.

Jennifer,

If Chuck is referring to Neal's Google Maps then you can access them (CONUS and OCONUS) from the links in the spacea.net Space-A Lodging Links.

If you decide to go to D.C. contact Neal Floyd though his profile and he can tell you how to get a map on military lodging in the D.C. area. The map is a GPS map and will show you where all the places anyone would want to go and how to get there.

P.S. After what you have been through your not going to let a little water stop you are you?

"I got the Sheraton by Dulles for only $45 per night on priceline.com."

That's a great deal! You didn't have to share the room with Shatner, did you?

there are many many lodging choices in DC-I have stayed at Bolling AFB, Navy Lodge (next door to Bolling)and Andrews AFB-have also stayed at the Naval Academy and at Quantico (you may want to get a copy of Military Living's publication at the PX or by mail) Bethesda and Walter Reed also have temp lodging.

Well, it looks like we will have to cancel anyway. WE will be home cleaning our flooded basement and replacing our hot water heater, washer, dryer and freezer. We were the epicenter of the floods. I was hoping I would go downstairs and things would still be working but it doesn't look like they are.
I appreciate all of the advice and I hope we will get to the DC area in the near future

PR is right that you might get good deals on PriceLine or other discounted sites, BUT if touring the downtown DC tourist spots (monuments, museums, Capitol, White House, etc.) you do NOT want to stay in a hotel way out in the Dulles airport area! You would have a long drive into DC and then face terrible parking restrictions.

You really should plan on leaving your car at your hotel and taking public transportation to do your touring.

A hotel/motel in Alexandria clost to Reagan National Airport would give you metrorail access (maybe with a short bus ride first, or the hotel may run shuttles to Metro), as also could some in Arlington. (Check with the 800 numbers of the various chains to see which say they are near a metroRAIL [preferably not the MetroBUS] stop and/or run shuttles to the nearest rail station.

You might also find decent discounts at downtown Washington hotels.

Remember: Location, location, location!

Use your car only for outlying attractions such as George Washington's Mount Vernon or the Manassas/Bull Run battlefield or the new supplemental huge Air & Space Museum out in Fairfax County. (At some of these places parking is free but entry is charged, and at another it may be the opposite.)

But be braced -- you have chosen THE MOST POPULAR time for tourists to come to DC. You may have problems getting lodging, there will be crowds on all public transportation, and the museums and monuments will also be full of families and big tour groups from schools all over the country.

Last week, I got the Sheraton by Dulles for only $45 per night on priceline.com. The AAA rate on their website was $189 for that night.

I Checked Ft Myers, Bethesda, etc. It looks like everything is booked. I'm going to have to book a regular hotel. It's OK. I knew that might be what happened.

Additional info: Ft Myers temp quarters next to Arlingond Natl Cemetery. Couple of minutes and in the cemetery. Walk to ANC subway about 15 minutes. Going downhill, return strong uphill walk. DVQ next door and can be had during slow times. Walk past Iwo Jima memorial. Actually great place to stay if walking is your pleasure.

Many years ago I was assigned to the Pentagon and lived at the Ft. Myers BOQ. They have since converted to temporary lodging. A couple of years ago I had Space A in the building I once actually lived in.

Rate was around 75.00 but limited number of suites. No recommended if no vehicle as subway stop not near by.

Dinotars, well I feel silly now. I did the usual look at the FAQ route. I looked at the CONUS listing for bases but I didn't see things like Quantico,Bethesda etc. I didn't even notice that there was a separate section for lodging. Thanks and sorry about that

William, I had looked at Andrews a week or so ago and had already noted that most of their lodging is closed down now as they are building a new one. I had crossed that one off my list.

Did you read the posts in the General section of this board about Andrews AFB and potential problems between 5-19 April due to a big international nuclear conference that will be held there?
I'd stay away from town. Andrews would normally be a good base of ops when visiting DC, especially if you have a car, but not now. Go some where else.

We have never been to DC before. We will be there for 3days with a car. We want to see all of the basic sites. I Did some research on lodging , I just don't know where the bases are in relation to the sights.
WE are at the epicenter of. The RI floods with a basement full of water so I am hoping we can still get out of town

You will get many opinions on your post!!

What do you mean by "action"? Will you have a car?
What do you want to see and have you been there before.

I like Bethesda Naval Medical center because of access to the subway. I park my car and use the subway and it provides access to the Mall, Arlington, Smithsonian, etc. There are basic services at the center. Get a day pass for under $10 and go where you want.

Everyone will have slightly different opinions based on what you indicate that you want to do.

Have fun and Happy Trails!!!
