Larry---there are many reasonable(for London) small hotels in the Bayswater area and Sussex Gardens area. These hotels are much closer to the main attractions and not far from a bus stop or Undeground. The Victory Club is located between these two areas.I have never stayed at the club, but did have an afternoon tea there.Sussex Gardens is within walking distance from Peddington Train Station. Good Luck |

Larry, last spring we stayed at the Holiday Inn in Camden Yard. It is close to the subway, lots of places close by to eat and very interesting area. We got the room on a travel site, the price was very good. I'm not sure what site we used, so just check them out. |

Larry, John is right that using the tube with heavy luggage or several pieces can be a pain from Heathrow. A very easy way around that is to take the escalator up to the Heathrow central bus station in terminal 2 and buy National Express bus ticket for £4 (2009 senior rate). Bus is non-stop 55 minute trip to Victoria Coach Station across street from Victoria RR station at Buckingham Palace Road & Elizabeth St. Absolutely no hassle with bags and it's a relaxing and scenic ride in to the city from the airport. From the Victoria Coach Station it's a very, very short taxi ride to the VSC. |

Longtime readers of this bb know I never stop singing the merits of the residence halls operated by the London School of Economics (LSE), that are open to tourists as well as students during university vacations, running this year from summer through the end of September. Each of the buildings, scattered around in Central London, is secure, and located near public transportation, pubs, and often has a grocery store within a few blocks. Even the buildings that are not officially "self catering" will have a kitchenette with small fridge, sink and range on each floor. The rooms are rather spartan but not as tiny as in many London "budget" hotels, and they are VERY clean and modern (no allergy problems--something you cannot say about an awful lot of Brit or European budget accommodations!). A twin room with "en suite" private bathroom seems to be running around 75GBP plus tax; you can spend even less if you are willing to step just a few doors down the hall to one of the well-located toilets. Most include a breakfast in the room rate; the breakfast will be "continental" at some and "full English" at others. (We've experienced both breakfast variations, and both were very satisfactory.) See photos, maps, descriptions of rooms, rates and availability, and even make a reservation, at: http://www.lsevacations.co.uk/default.htm |

My thanks to all of you for the wonderful advise. I'm getting ready to go to Chili and pick-up a NCL Cruise and will be back in 3 weeks. Will get right on all this info when I get back home and see what I can find out. Again - thanks, Larry |

Larry, check the VSC web site that includes answers to your questions and details of the accomodations, pictures, etc. For private "facilities", make sure you book "en suite". We just came back from London and "not too expensive" is a bit challenging- think New York City prices. VSC is in a good location with access to the Tube and not too far from Paddington Train Station. If VSC is not available, there are many hotels of small to medium size in the Lancaster Gate/Hyde Park area-check out Trip Advisor for reviews/pricing. One last point, I think you mentioned on a previous post of going on a cruise- if you have anything heavier than 30 lbs.or multiple bags, think twice about using the Tube getting to or leaving your hotel since not all stations have elevators/escalators and necessary transfers between lines can involve a hike. Taxi's are fairly priced and much more efficient (though not as inexpensive as the Tube). Good luck. |

Larry, my wife and I have stayed there on a number of occasions and find the location very convenient. It's only a block from the Marble Arch tube station. It is a hotel design with a restaurant, bar, library etc. and has recently been remodeled. For complete information check out their website at http://www.vsc.co.uk/. |

Bob - would all of us have our own rooms (one room per couple?) Have you stayed there and is it like a B and B? What was the cost? Can we make reservations in advance? What are the rooms like and do we each have our own bath room? Thanks for the help, Larry |

Larry, if you're a member of the Victory Services Club in London you are entitled to bring up to 4 guests to stay at the Club. |

Larry, Check out the "wiki" pages at spacea.net. There are two places in London that cater to military folks - see the link below: http://spacea.net/mediawiki/index.php?title=Space-A_Travel_Links#Lodging_2 See? Magic!! Now, here's how to do the Magic yourself (works for other locations): 1. Go to www.spacea.net 2. Click on "Space-A Travel Links" 3. Scroll Down to and click on "England/UK" |

We need a nice (but not too expensive) room in London for the nights of the 8th, 9th 10th and 11th of Sept. 2010. Might even rent a house or flat - were we can fix our own meals. Is there anyone out there in Computerland that might know of a place to stay in London. We are looking for a place for 2 couples. My wife and I are military - but the other people are normal. |
