It is close to the subway, lots of places close by to eat and very interesting area. We got the room on a travel site, the price was very good. A very easy way around that is to take the escalator up to the Heathrow central bus station in terminal 2 and buy National Express bus ticket for £4 (2009 senior rate). Bus is non-stop 55 minute trip to Victoria Coach Station across street from Victoria RR station at Buckingham Palace Road & Elizabeth St. Absolutely no hassle with bags and it's a relaxing and scenic ride in to the city from the airport. From the Victoria Coach Station it's a very, very short taxi ride to the VSC.   Cherry C. Each of the buildings, scattered around in Central London, is secure, and located near public transportation, pubs, and often has a grocery store within a few blocks. Even the buildings that are not officially "self catering" will have a kitchenette with small fridge, sink and range on each floor. The rooms are rather spartan but not as tiny as in many London "budget" hotels, and they are VERY clean and modern (no allergy problems--something you cannot say about an awful lot of Brit or European budget accommodations!). A twin room with "en suite" private bathroom seems to be running around 75GBP plus tax; you can spend even less if you are willing to step just a few doors down the hall to one of the well-located toilets. Most include a breakfast in the room rate; the breakfast will be "continental" at some and "full English" at others. (We've experienced both breakfast variations, and both were very satisfactory.) We just came back from London and "not too expensive" is a bit challenging- think New York City prices. VSC is in a good location with access to the Tube and not too far from Paddington Train Station. If VSC is not available, there are many hotels of small to medium size in the Lancaster Gate/Hyde Park area-check out Trip Advisor for reviews/pricing. One last point, I think you mentioned on a previous post of going on a cruise- if you have anything heavier than 30 lbs.or multiple bags, think twice about using the Tube getting to or leaving your hotel since not all stations have elevators/escalators and necessary transfers between lines can involve a hike. Taxi's are fairly priced and much more efficient (though not as inexpensive as the Tube). It's only a block from the Marble Arch tube station. It is a hotel design with a restaurant, bar, library etc. and has recently been remodeled. My wife and I are military - but the other people are normal.
