Don, thanks for this useful and enlightening information. I've stayed at the Q on many occasions and never looked at the Navy Lodge. With that price difference I'll keep a future eye on it.

Larry, not necessarily so in the Va area. I just came back a couple weeks ago, Navy Lodge at Lt Creek, $60 per night, Gateway Inn, $56 per night. Navy Lodge had 2 queen beds, with cooking facility s, GWI 1 queen bed with a microwave. You know where we stayed.

"what is the difference between Navy Lodge , Gateway Inn and VOQ?"

Nick, the "difference" is about 50 dollars a night!

I spent last weekend on the Amp. Base on Coronado with my daughter. I had first asked for double bed when signing up with the Navybed operator and was told I could get a room with a couch hide-a-bed. But when checking in, the receptionist said no, that was only in the officers quarters and as I am E6, no such luck. So we got a rollaway bed and it was not in very good condition, but for $36/night on Coronado island, I will gladly make due.

All you married people that need extra or "larger" sized beds are "again killing me".

What is with that??? I did not know that was a military benefit!!!

If I invite a person over from a local drinking establishment because I feel that she has had to much to drink--I don't want TWO BEDS!! Tee hee!!

Cherry, I have also seen two beds in Gateways but I am not sure which ones right now. I do remember that MacDill/Tampa had two separate rooms-one with a pull out and Key West had two separate beds. Of course Key West was Navy. Also some Gateways do have "pull out" sofas.

I am sure that you will get some other bases that have two beds.

I am trying to figure out why that is a consideration. If you can sleep on the deck of a C-17, you can probably sleep with your spouse for a night or two.

To our pleased surprise, we have found rooms with 2 twin beds at Navy Gateway Inns at NAS North Island (San Diego area) and also at China Lake. (Both have signs out front stating they are Combined Bachelor Housing [CBH] but you still reserve via the Gateway Inn number.)

I'd be willing to wager that there are some other "Gateway" (i.e., less expensive) facilities at other bases that also have pairs of twin beds in some rooms.

Can anyone here add to the list?

Another way of explaining the difference between BOQs, BEQs, billeting, lodging, et al, and Navy Lodges is that each of the first four (excluding Navy Lodges) offer housing for one bachelor enlisted, bachelor officer person - not persons. This is why you will normally find in most BOQs, BEQs, billeting, lodging, one queen sized bed - not a king, nor two beds. It was explained to me this way several years ago after I had questioned why my wife and I could not get two beds. "Sir," this is for individuals, not couples. So, fact is, if you cannot sleep in a double bed or a queen bed with your spouse, you might be better off paying the extra money for Navy Lodging. As someone has said, they are two different entities. We always try for a suite, even though more expensive than normal lodging. At least we have the chance of having the living room couch made into another bed.

Navy lodge is a commercial motel run by NEX. They make a profit.

Navy Gateway Inns and Suites is transient billeting run by the Navy. It used to be called VOQ, VEQ, etc. before the facilities were partially consolidated.

Navy Lodge will almost always be more expensive than Navy Gateway. The rooms in Navy Lodge are almost identical around the world. Those in Navy Gateway vary greatly.

Can someone enlighten me - what is the difference between Navy Lodge , Gateway Inn and VOQ?

On a recent stop in San Diego, it seemed like I called the world before finding a bed.

Air Force Academy lodging has online reservations, too. $39 a night as I recall. The software worked well when I reserved a room last October.

Nice rooms, but a little remote. Unless you use the O Club next door, you have to drive quite a way just to get something to eat.

I should amend that to say that the 3 lodging types use 3 different reservation systems. All the lodging info is on the dodlodging.net site. As soon as you click on the online reservation button, then you are sent off to 3 different sets of reservation software.

The dodlodging.net site actually just sends you to the other sites. AF is on the left and Navy Inns on the right. Navy Lodges are down lower in the middle.

There are about 8 AF places that have online reservations. I have used McGuire and Peterson, for example. You have to go to the individual AF base listing and see if there is an 'online' reservation button up by the reservation number.

As evidence of how you are being routed to other sites, you will find that you can't use the 'back' buttom to get back to the dodlodging.net site.

The Navy Inn software is particularly painful and behaves quite poorly when trying to navigate from one set of Inns to another.

PR: The dodlodging.net website will allow you to make reservation at Gateway Inns. Has anyone out there made reservations at Air Force Inns using dodlodging.net, as a retiree (Space A)? To reserve rooms at Navy Lodges you can either call 1-800 NAVY-INN or I use their website. www.navy-lodge.com/.

Just to be clear...dodlodging.net lets you make reservations with the AF, Navy Inns, or Navy Lodges. All use different reservation systems and user id/ passwords.

The one with the funny/ difficult password requirement is the Navy Inns.

I like having accounts set up because the systems remember your reservations and remember your cancellations. So, you have a good record of what you have done.

Also, you sometimes have better luck with the computer system than with the registration folks. McGuire folks told me that they hate the system because it hands out all the rooms even if they are trying to hold some back.

Everyone is right. You have to pay attention as this is really a different requirement for a password. Just to have it ready I went through it and now have a room reserved in a part of the world that I won't be anywhere near for tomorrow night. So, I've turned around and cancelled it. I hope I didn't also lose my password in the process. Perhaps now I'll be ready to shoot a reservation through quickly to my destination as I'm waiting to board the bus outside the pax terminal.

Bob,

I don't think you can make online reservations without creating an account. It's handy to be able to manage your reservations online.

Mike is correct about their password. It's by far the most complex password requirement I've seen.

What's the purpose of creating an account? Is there some advantage to doing so? Isn't it easier to call or use the Internet without creating an account?

Vic and Connie: Setting up the DODLODGING.NET user name (e-mail address) and password is a lot of fun...NOT! They've given new meaning to website access security requiring two upper- and lower-case letters, two numerals and two special characters (e.g., #,<,[,), etc.)! I finally got them to accept a convoluted combination after the third or fourth attempt, but remembering it is a challenge! Good luck!

From their website (FAQ's) I found the following:

How do I create a username and password?

When you have selected your destination and room type, you will then be navigated to the ‘Create a Profile and Password’ page. Your profile will be created after you have accepted Navy Gateway Inns and Suites ‘Terms and Conditions.’
Note: In order for you to create your account, you must fill out every field on the ‘Guest Information’ form.

PR, I tried several times on my latest trip to log on to DOD and check availably for several places. I don't know about anyone else, but when I put the dates in, it kept telling me that the dates were not right. I would put them in manually,(by not clicking on the calender)and then it would come back saying the place was closed. Is it just me? or are others having problems when going into DODlodging?

Since I did not get my email to confirm this room, I called again today to see if they would send it again. Well when they answered the number I had a 6 minute wait, it is now 30 minutes later. Out of stuborness, I will not push that button so they can call me back when it is less busy. I can see this is a good improvment for both places!!

I also called for for reservations on the toll free no. for Rota Gateway lodging and was told there were no rooms available for the time we'll be there. I immediately went online and was able to book for that time but only for a standard room. I called back and was told they only get a certain amount of rooms to book via the telephone. The agent checked my reservation in the computer and it came up. Now, when we get to Rota, we'll see if they have the reservation

Phyllis the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago. I was in Va, trying to check on rooms in Sigonella. Called one number, thought I was talking to the Gateway Inn people, come to find out it was Navy lodge. $77.00 per night. Said I would take it, they confirmed by e-mail. Then I tried the Gateway Inn number again, this time got in touch with that side of things. When I got to checking the numbers, (I am not use to where they put the names in the number, I have to look at the dial and write it down) both numbers were the same.

Next time if I can't do it on line, then I will ask for Gateway Inn when I call first.

Phyllis,
I'm not clear on what happened. In the US you dial 1-800-NAVY-INN for the Navy Lodge and 900-931123 for them in Spain. The Navy Gateway Inns toll free number is 1-877-628-9233. Which 800 number did you dial? Did the call go to Spain or the US?

I called Gateway's 800 # to book a room in Rota. I was told they were full on the dates I wanted, I said well I guess I'll have to call the Navy Lodge. The gentleman I was talking with said, "no problem, we book them too." My question is, when did this start? Last time I called the 800 # it went right to Rota, but not this time, he said that since the desk folks are busy with people staying there, it rings to the same place as the Navy Lodge.
