I lived just up from Barber's Point for 5-1/2 years. It is a great beach to boogey board or learn how to surf (there used to be if there still isn't, someone who gives lessons to military id card holders only). Too rough for snorkeling. (You can drive to Ko Olina lagoons past Kapolei and it is calm and there are some fish, but not like going to Shark's Cove on the North Shore.) It is close to restaurants in Kapolei, which is nice. As for the lodging, it is close to the beach, but the tradeoff is the that locals can enter the area. Never heard any complaints from anyone about being harassed. No rays, either. Maybe a hammerhead or two... If you want security, you might try Bellows on the windward side of the island. It is a Navy/Marine area. (They have a little problem with jellyfish certain times of the year). Pililaau did have a murder back in 2000 when I first moved there, but no trouble since. It is AWAY from EVERYTHING, but very nice otherwise. Pick up a 101 things to do in Hawaii magazine at the airport. That will help plan things. Or you can email me. I used to act as tourguide to the 172nd ANG when they came to town. Have fun! |

Can everyone swim at Barbers Point? I heard there were rays in the water. |

Haze, you have little to no chance of getting reservations for more than a night or two at any of the Hawaii lodgings, Barbers Point or elsewhere. Six months to a year's headstart is even pretty iffy. But, you know, you might luck up and get something this late. Be advised, Barber's Point is way out and you will have to have a rental car. Good luck! |

We meet some folks staying there last this January while we were at the BFB. They were not all that happy with it, they did not have one of the redone cabins, IF they could have got their money back they would have moved. |

Last year we were at Sand Island and I asked the Petty Officer in charge of the galley if retirees could eat there and he said "retirees are always welcome in my galley" |

Sorry, I am only familar with Hawaii. Sand Island and Barbers Point both welcome retires with open arms. Phil |

Hi Phil, Thanks for the info. This is slightly off topic and if someone wants to move it--feel free. You commented "The Plus here is that retirees are welcome to eat in any Coast Guard gally and the food is great." Do you know if all Coast Guard Galley's are open to retirees. I did a quick search of Sand Island in Hawaii and did not find a list of facilities. Do you know if they have a galley. I am aware of the "cooking school" and lodging in Petaluma CA and a few other limited Coast Guard Units. Any info from any other source will be appreciated. |

I have been trying to keep Pililaau a secret for years. I wanted to keep this piece of paridise to myself and you guys are letting the cat out of the bag. Now everyone will try to stay there. They just changed the reservation policy so only Army retirees can reserve one year out. The rest of us retirees can only reserve 4 months in advance. As for children, they have lifeguards on the swimming beach everyday. All "locals" must have a DOD decal on their auto or they part outside and walk in, even retiree's. The security is top notch with up to 4 guards on duty at all times. Maybe it is just me, but I have no desire to be outside the gate after dark, no matter where I stay. As for the cabins at Barbers Point. I have visited other retiree's staying there and the cabins are clean and it is a "gated" community with a card needed to get in. I would stay there in a heart beat. The Plus here is that retirees are welcome to eat in any Coast Guard gally and the food is great. My bottom line advice is to visit both and decide for yourself. Happy Travels, Phil |

We stayed at Barbers point about 6 years ago and the cottages were fine, but they are isolated and the area is wide open for anyone to get to. Spouse was quite uneasy. Have more recently stayed at Pililaau and enjoyed it very much. It is secure and while the area outside the gate is not affluent, the residents were very friendly. Breakfast at the on base club is great with a beautiful view. |

Hazegray, Pililaau is a wonderful place for older kids to swim and rent kayaks. Getting there is what you hear is bad--we were just thru there in March and the area seems to be a little cleaner. Eleven in our family spent a week there in Aug 08. Since then the cabins have been redecorated. The rec area has a security guard to get on the property and security guards wandering around the grounds. I wrote about our trip, but I think I put it under lodging. You might be able to locate it in the archives. Our youngest daughter is forever saying "Wainae still in Pililaau"!!! We rented 3 cabins for the 11 of us, one all time great family vacation. Elaine |

Don't let "bad things" that you have read about Pililaau dissuade you from trying it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. If you like McD's, they are right outside the gate. I like to eat breakfast there. The people are friendly. |

Any advice on the Barbers Point beach cabins? I just stumbled onto them and now I'm considering trying them. Anyone else been there recently? Taking the family to Oahu June 14 - 28 and still casting about for affordable lodging - hopefully near a beach. I have reservations for Hale Koa, but would prefer to be out of the "downtown" area. Bellows and Kaneohe won't take a "retiree" reservation yet, and I've read bad things about the neighborhood at Pililaau. Any advice? Thanks |
