Previously, A SPAT recommended the YMCA to me. I haven't tried it yet but plan to . According to the website the rooms look nice and it is in the center of the business district and close to transportation. Happy Travels Carole |

PR, you might be surprised to find that many of those overly friendly women, and particularly the more beautiful ones, aren't women. |

I have been stuck overnight twice in Singapore. The first time I slept in the airport. The second time I found a hostel near Paya Lebar that was right near the train line. It wasnt plush, but sure beat sleeping in the airport. Cost around $20. If I have to stay in a hostel, I try for the Hostelling International Brand name. But there were none available in January of 2010, so I stayed at another. Not as good. JC |

I walked past most of these cheaper places. I tend to get confused (when my wife is not with me) about overly friendly women in strange places. There were plenty of friendly woman in the Hotel 81 areas. If you or mama is uncomfortable with 'overly friendly women' areas, a couple of suggestions: First, I stayed at the Grand Mercure Roxy and was quite happy with it. Across the steet is a very large market/ food stall type of place. Second, I walked into and checked out the Parkroyal on Beach Road. It is just across the street from little India and quite close to downtown. Third, at the same $100 level, you can usually get a $300/night room on Priceline.com at a 5 star hotel. The service is just exceptional in Singapore. Also, the breakfasts are worth the money alone. |

"geyland distict = skid row" I don't think I call it skid row. It's definitely colorful but as Jerry said there's some nice budget hotels in Geyland. I use hostels a lot too, especially if I'll be staying somewhere for a few days. But in Sing I usually arrive in the mid-afternoon, find a hotel in nearby Geylang and take the MRT to Changi Airport the next morning. I spent a month in Singapore one weekend; nice clean, orderly place but not a lot to DO. |

It's also ~ $20 (US) from Paya Lebar to Sembawang by taxi. |

Carole G: Usually we stay in the Geylang district. There are several budget hotel chains with properties there, Hotel 81 and Fragrance are the names of two of them. Rooms are very small but clean. We have stayed at the Hotel 81 Princess a number of times. Costs about $35-$40 U.S. depending on the exchange rate. We usually just go to the airport and buy tickets to Bangkok at the Air Asia booth. Last time was January of this year. cost was about $130 U.S. as I recall. There are a couple more, Jet Star is one, at about the same price. Hope this helps. |

Where do you stay if you don't use the billeting 45-60 min away? Have you ever taken commercial air to Bangkok? |

Each of the buildings has 6 apartments with 3 bedrooms each. You pay for the whole place no matter how many beds you use. At about $100 per night, it is not cheaper than staying downtown using Priceline.com. I got tired of the 45-60 minute commute into town and back each day. |

Edgar, just to clarify for you. There is no U.S. billeting for retirees at Paya Lebar that I'm aware of. When folks speak of billeting on Singapore they're referring to Sembawang located in the northern part of the country and operated by the USN. It's easily accessible by taxi or light rail elevated train. It is a former Brit BOQ. |

Edgar, There is no lodging available to us at Paya Labar. The Singapore Air Force is, in fact, just a bit cool to us. The less time we spend on their base, the better they like it. The closest space-a lodging is at Sembawang, a considerable distance away. |

Has anyone stayed at the RSAF Paya Lebar? Are their lodging units available to retired US military or not? I am going to Singapore next week and am looking for reasonable priced lodging near Paya Lebar if not able to stay at base. |
