I'm with Robert. For the price of a room plus internet plus breakfast for two at Edelweiss I can get a nice B&B plus a 4-course dinner and have some money left over for a few beers.

Jack, the Edelweiss is good because of the conveniences such as resturant, bars but especiall the tours. They offer multiple tours which are very good. You can take advantage of the tours even if you do not stay there. However, if you want to stay among the locals research www.gasthof-fraundorfer.de. It's in Garmisch well located with a good resturant and a good location. There is also a Marriott Renainsance hotel located close to the Edelweiss but not convenient to the town. It's isolation make it quiet and serene. At either the Edelweiss or the Marriott you will need a car to get around the town.

Jack, We love the Garmisch area(south of Munich). The R&R facility (Edelweiss) is there BUT we've always stayed in a gasthaus-more reasonable prices. Plus there are a number of castles, Oberammergau, Zugspitz, surrounding villages and Alps, etc. that are really "neat" if one has never been there and all within less than an hours drive. Should you decide to go to this area, email me and I'll give you a cafe and restaurant recommendation. Bob

For some time now my wife and I have had thoughts about visiting Germany and/or Switzerland. We did Germany last year in September but never got to that portion near the Swiss Alps. We also keep thinking of the military resorts available but I see various posts about them being too expensive. All of this said, we now are thinking in terms of an early September trip. How about some ideas from those of you who have been there, done that.
