Rooms still hard to get in Rota. We arrived Friday without any reservations, and were not able to get in. We did get a room at the Navy Lodge and were able to extend it for the one more night we needed. When we arrived there was a large group of active duty who had arrived with what they thought was a reservation. They too were told no room. After several phone calls, the CBQ told they they were going to put them up in town and they needed to speak to the manager on Monday so what the problem was.

Here's my Trip Advisor review from Hotel Caribe in Rota, two years ago. I walked there from the VQ with my bags, about 30-40 minutes total, safe. Area is very noisy (motorbikes, mostly), take earplugs!

Just back from Rota. Had a 7 day reservation via DOD Lodging on internet, but arrived a day early. Internet and phone call claimed no availability for that day, but we went directly to Lodging office. They found a room for us in BLDG 29 and a room for another retiree. It pays to go directly to Lodging office

I am with Phil. We were there 10 days at last year's S&S.

We reserved our room for 7 days without them even blinking an eye. Then we had to extend daily for the next 3 or 4 days (as quite a few other folks) until we could get a flight back to the States. There was never any problem extending for those extra days.

Maybe we were just lucky and the troop level coming through there was down? Whatever the case, there were plenty of rooms available.

Reed,

I would take Bill's recommendation; nice place, nice area.

Happy travels!

Stayed at the Hotel Caribe downtown Rota earlier this month when nothing available at the Gateway Inn or Navy Lodge. Rates are seasonal but this time of the year it was around $60 US. Nice clean room, nothing special but I'd stay again. Close to restaurants and the beach. You would probably need to take a cab there if you didn't have a rental car.

Not true for us, James. During the last two S&S's that we have attended, we have been able to make reservations for 7 days through http://dodlodging.net/ .

Have used Hostals Macavi and Giralda. Excellent English spoken at the latter. Reasonable rates during the offseason (mid SEP to mid MAY), very clean and close to restaurants and bars.
Last OCT it was 35 Euros for a double.

We've been to Rota several times as retirees, and we were always able to get a room at the Gateway, but they throw you out after 3 days. The fallback is the Navy Lodge, not as nice and costs more. Failing that, you could get a cab or walk to Paco's travel in town where they will find you something at a good price. Some others may have specific off-base recommendations.

Anyone recommend a Off Base Hotel near Rota while waiting for a Space A flight as Cat VI may need one I am assuming on base lodging is very hard to get as a retiree
