Just wanted to add...Teresa village and Bob Hope Village in FWB/Shalimar, FL are very well liked among their residents. As a nurse in that area I ran into a lot of them quite often and they all raved about it. They make lots of "field" trips, provide transportation to the BX, commissary, doctor's appointments, etc. Ever been to Eglin's commisary, the ride to the commisary is worth it, even if you can drive! They used to have a short video on Teresa Village and Bob Hope with the residents talking about how much they loved it. It's great because instead of staying in a little apartment like most assisted living facilites, there are activites that are appealing to keep you busy. I know the ladies loved it when the active duty troops from Eglin came to complete the "honey do list" and the Valentine's day dance. The friendship between the residents is the best part, they are always looking out for one another. I have also visited both Teresa Village and Bob Hope and they are beautiful! Very well kept and Bob Hope even has a security guard (un-needed in my opinion, as it is in a very nice predominantly retired military residental area). I'm 26 and I would love to retire there when I am at that point. Just wanted to add my two cents..

There are quite a few military-officer-oriented Continuing Care Communities around the country. (However, they do not cater to the "indigent" -- all have buy-in fees and monthly fees; some include guaranteed Long Term Care and at others that is a la carte so you should have LTC insurance).

Once or twice a year the MOAA magazine runs articles about them and sells a LOT of ads to complement the write-ups (but not all that exist around the country are featured, partly because there are so many?).

I am sure there are some such in Florida (I know of at least one at the beaches, east of Jacksonville). Here in the DC greater metro area we have a lot and although they are usually under the sponsorship of an organization affiliated with just one of the services, they are open to all members and have a very mixed clientele that get along just fine together. Many are open also to Foreign Service and other retired government personnel.

In addition, many such communities while not officially for the military have a large retired military contingent in residence. I'm thinking of places like Goodwin House and The Jefferson here.

I HIGHLY recommend visiting NOW any and all such facilities that might be candidates for your later years. Many have scheduled open houses, with tours and a meal and a chance to chat with residents. Even if such a visit is not on the calendar, they will be pleased to invite you to come for a personal visit and possibly even an overnight stay. Investigate NOW while you are still active, so you narrow down your choices! Fees and accommodations vary widely (as does the refundability -- or not -- of your entrance fee) so you should scrutinize them and decide according to your comfort level.

Most will allow you to go on their waiting list and will not penalize you if, when your name comes up, you pass on the opportunity. This means that when you ARE ready to move, you have a good chance of getting in quickly.

We are still determined to remain at home, and hire outside help if needed for things like yard work if we get to the point where we cannot handle it and have not gone on any such waiting lists. However, I will pass along a piece of advice from some friends who recently moved to The Fairfax (Army sponsored; administered under contract by Sunrise as are many in this area) and love it. Our friends say, "Move to your community of choice BEFORE one of you dies. It is much easier to fit in and make friends when you are a couple, than if you come in as a single widow or widower." (We're not yet ready to take that advice, but admit it has merit.)

This poses an interesting question: What about other services "villages" or officer "villages." I live in a gated retirement community in central Florida but have heard of these "progressive" life-style communities offered by the Air Force. I could care less whether or not it is an officer environment but would be interested in an environment that would cater to me as I become less active, etc.
