a few weeks ago when i returned space-a from travis, a couple i met on the same journey told me they had a room at the navy lodge for a night - after being told there were NO rooms at all - and cost them only $60. don't know the details...

Danny, I guess the economy is getting all of us. I recall a couple of years ago the Rota Navy Lodge was $71 per night. I've always been fortunate enough to catch a room in the Q or at the Navy Lodge. I plan on being there in little more than week so I'll see if my luck holds or it's out the gate on the economy.

I thought the reference was to Sonara, California which is about 120 miles east of San Francisco. Missed the prior poster named Sonara. Thanks.

i would rather stay overnight at the terminal than stay in the NL in Rota (and I have several times), and i live here!! for now that is. such a shame how each place is not standard and charges differently.

Mike, $56 is cheap compared to what the Navy Lodge charges at Rota. Was there few weeks ago, and did not give them my money, one person at the NL in Rota is $70+. Believe it is now $79.

If I don’t get a room in the Gateway Inn at Rota I will wing it while waiting on a flight out.

I have found nicer hotels in Spain for less than what the Navy Lodge charges!

I guess they don't care what they charge since the majority of people staying in the Lodge at Rota are on orders (PCS in/out, flight crew, troops stuck in Rota etc.)

Also, the Army Guest House system over charges for what a customer gets. I never stay in them.

Willian Standage: I'm betting that the Hickam lodging you mentioned was not the rundown quarters next to the O-club, but across therefrom a block or so away. And yes, these digs are great if one lucks out and gets them! T'was sorry to learn that Hickam's (better) lodging will soon be subsumed by the Gateway Inns; but, higher rates notwithstanding, overall and quality wise things might actually improve.

I visited Hawaii in March and spent a couple of nights at Hickam in the VOQ apts near the Oclub. I found those rooms to be excellent. They are two story units with two bedrooms upstairs and a complete living area downstairs. The billeting office told me that they would come under Navy Gateway Inns next fiscal year (Oct 2010). Hickam is now part of the new Joint Base Pearl Harbor. Expect rates to increase to match the current Gateway price structure.

Joe and Carole (and others considering Hickam lodging): If the only rooms open on a space-available basis are the rundown digs next to the O-club, and IF you have wheels, you'd probably find better lodging at a slightly higher rates at Pearl Harbor. We've found the rooms at the Makalapa Gateway Inn, especially, to be quite clean and comfortable--and less than $56/night.

Joe,
You did miss the boat at Hickam. When you check in to get lodging ask for a room near the lodging office. They tried to give us a room down near the officer's club too, but folks we met on the plane had stayed there and told us it wasn't nice. Plus as you said, it is far from the terminal.
Better luck next time, Joe.

John Civik,
You're at Widbey but can't eat in the chow hall.

My wife and I just came back from 2 days at Bangor Sub Base, Silverdale WA. We were told we cound not eat in the Galley. We had eaten there for years. (nicest dining hall I have ever seen) The clerk told us the change was about a year ago.

I'm wondering if this change is for the Pacific Northwest and/or where else?

Carole G, I guess we pulled the short straw when we stayed at Hickam last month. We were put in a building down near the O Club (which was closed) and these rooms (actually a suite $78./night) had seen better days long ago. Additionally, if you're in these buildings you really need a car to get almost anywhere (restaurant, commissary, etc.). I'll know better next time.

As we all know in this wonderful world of SpaceA, every once in a while you have to kiss a toad.

I'm currently at Whidbey Island NAS Inn and am paying $40 per night for 7 nights. Not bad for the cost , convenience and safety. Can't eat in the chow hall but I'm not starving regardless.

Wow, looks like I shook a hornets' nest! Seems most agree that, cost-wise and compared to Air Force lodging, the Gateway Inns are sorely lacking. Although the prices at interior, west coast, Hawaiian and overseas Gateway Inns are usually less expensive, how the Navy can justify the $56/night standard room rates at inns on the east coast is beyond me. And, Jack, as you know, a perfectly adequate private room with two single beds can still be had at NAS North Island for $22/night! But, alas, rumor has it that they are on the renovation list. When completed I'm betting that the $22 rate will be a thing of the past.

Agree Travis is the best for SPATS needs. The dining hall is very close to the beautiful lodging and you can walk to the terminal from lodging.
Retirees can use the dining facility and take a guest. My husband has never been asked for my ID.
Only wish all bases were set up like Travis. It sure makes life easier for all SPATS. A day waiting for a flight at Travis is less than $40.

Joe,
I must agree with you about AF lodging, it is the best! It is also a great value in comparing to other services lodging. Many AF lodging facilities are being upgraded and or renovated. Hickam lodging is not bad and is very close to the terminal. We stayed in quite a few different rooms at Hickam in March and I felt they were all nice and a good value at $39.

I've always maintained the Air Force lodging is the best and the best value (I'll make an exception for Hickam). My wife and I stayed one night two weeks ago at Travis and the $39. suite was over the top in terms of value. Clean - BR, LR, bath, pantry, amentities and across the street from the Dining Facility which is open to retirees. What's not to like?!?!

the LAST and ONLY time I stayed at a Navy Lodge it was in 1990 (yea i know: ancient history) and i was still active duty. i was moving family to another base and we had just checked out of base housing. we stayed at the lodge on Hampton Blvd just down the road from gate 1. thank gawd it was ONLY one night!! roaches, a big hole in the bathroom behind the toilet and things were crawling out of that, the shower drain was not working... you name it it happened. i informed the duty manager who couldn't care... i wrote a suggestion card about all that and never got a reply, nor did i expect one. i have never again stayed at a Navy Lodge since (i am navy) but USAF, now that's a different story!!!

We stayed at Mayport billeting in Oct 2008. It was an Oceanfront one bedroom suite for $33 a night. I met a couple on the beach that was staying at the Navy Lodge right next door and they were paying $66 night. They couldn't believe the difference in price. We stay at billeting whenever possible when we travel.

Just 2 years ago we stayed at the Navy Lodge on Mayport NS - A very comfortable ocean front room for as I recall about $65. Somebody had left a comment card in the room whining about the cost. Guess they should have stayed at a commercial place just off base and paid well over a hundred a night.

Mike,

One thing many of us don't think about is security. I myself would feel a lot safer at any military installation than I would at any hotel/motel, be it next to a highway or a big city.

Happy travels!

I was able to get a king size bed at Best Western in PA at a weekday rate for $55.55 including taxes, newspaper and all you can eat cont. breakfast.

No pets allowed and no smoking at this motel. The biggest difference is the road noise was greater at the B.W. at nightime.

I still look military first if a base is nearby.

I think those single rooms are reasonably priced. i have stayed at Travis AFB a few times and it's priced at $39 as was a recent stuck-stay at Pope AFB. I think it's a shame that most Navy bases have higher prices...

Mike: I might be willing to join you but what are you advocating grousing about? If it is the increased rates I might be interested. I cannot complain about $56 for a standard room per se as a comperable motel would be a bit more. That said, a comperable motel would have two beds which a standard Navy room does not. My main complaint is, with all of the upgrading of lodging/billeting, et al going on, why does the Navy (unlike the Air Force) not think that these rooms should not be only considered for bachelors but by married couples. A double bed just does not do it these days. At the new Ramstein facility, for example, many of the rooms have two queen-sized beds. I routinely ask for suites because my wife and I, although we love each other, do not do well in a double or even queen-sized bed. Mike, you asked for it, this is kicking it off.

I loved the "Can I fuss for a minute" threads in the Off Topic Forum, and wondered if anyone would like to join me in a grousing session about the Navy's over-the-top lodging rates ($56 for a standard room!) at installations up and down the east coast.
