Lester - Arriving at Camp Rell late shouldn't be a problem, it is closer than the USCGA, and if you get a reservation, the security building is open 24/7 and they should leave your key with them.

Mervin: Thanks for your input. We leave for CT this week and will see how things pan out for us in the New London area. Our problem is that we always get a late start from the DC area which means that we generally arrive around 8 or 9PM, so Camp Rell may be inconvenient for us. Hoping for space at the USCG's Munn Hall which is open 24/7 and is close to I-95.

Lester - I have stayed at Camp Rell many times. Depending on whether or not it's a drill week end or OCS is conducting training, getting a room is usually not a problem. They have some really nice suites facing the water, and even the rooms that share a bath are nice. Call again to see if they will accept a request for reservation for a week out. You can always make a reservation at the Coast Guard Academy or the New London Sub Base, and if you get a room at Camp Rell, cancel your other reservation. The cost is far less than the other facilities. Tell them Chief LeBlanc from Louisiana highly recommended the location to you. As for dining, there are a few places in Niantic, but my favorite is "Flanders Fish Market & Restaurant" in East Lyme, which is about a block west of Exit 74 of I-95, about 3 miles from Camp Rell.

The facility is always named after the current Connecticut governor, now Jodi Rell. The name thus changes every four or eight years (or sooner if a Federal grand jury catches them).

Camp Rell is a CT National Guard facility so it doesn't have much in the way of services. The PX is small (shopette type), etc. Its location(in the town of East Lyme) is OK with the village of Niantic nearby-a few nice restaurants-one particularly popular Irish pub-The Black Sheep on Main Street- also- a decent seafood restaurant just North of I95-Flanders Fish market.

While a bit of a drive, I believe that "On The Waterfront Cafe" in New London is one of the best "value" in the area- it has a terrific harbor location, the food is excellent, and the prices reasonable. Check your GPS for 250 Pequot Avenue.

For other lodging options, you might also consider the Gateway at the Sub Base in Groton, it was recently renovated and is close to the main NEX/Commissary.

Hi Lester,

I also stayed at the Coast Guard Academy about 19 months ago on my trip back from Maine to see the "colors". I really enjoyed that location.

I also stayed at Camp Rell, (I think that is the spelling)on the way up to Maine.

Any base facilities are lacking but I enjoyed it and the price was correct. It appeared to be a basic Guard Training site with basic drill facilities and field. It had a small exchange with limited groceries. It really is only a place to stay overnight if the location is correct. It was for me.

The units are relatively new. They were clean and faced the east and inlet. My unit shared a bath but I think there were only 4 units used as it was not a drill weekend and so a shared bath was not a problem. I remember a coffee pot but don't remember a micro. There are several good eating facilities within a short drive.

It does not compare with the Coast Guard Academy but it depends on why you are staying there. The Coast Guard Academy is a base and this is really a drill site with some amenities.

The housing desk has normal hours. I have GPS coordinates if you want them.

Send me a private email if you want more info.

I haven't stayed in New London/Groton area for some years now, but last time there in 2007 we (my sisters and I) had Great RIBS at "Russell's for Ribs" in Groton on Rte 12 just north of the I95 junction. Follow signs to Rte 12 North and less than a mile on the right!!! Deee Lishusssss

Some time ago, I stayed at the Coast Guard Academy billets (Munn Hall) and I preferred them over the nearby Navy Lodge in Groton, for various reasons. Some time ago,I remember someone commenting about the rooms at Camp Reill which is nearby, and I would like to ask what the billets are like there and if they are updated, clean and have a refrigerator in the room or in a common room nearby.

I recently called there and was told that they only permit Space Aers to make reservations 48 hours in advance and that since I would be arriving after 6 PM, that the key would be with the OD, as the housing desk would be closed, so I would not have a chance to see the room before reserving and paying for it. Since the Coast Guard Academy is full when I intend to travel, I would appreciate any input that any of you may have who have stayed there with some detail about what the base is like and whether there are any decent restaurants nearby, etc.... Thanks
