Bill, I read with interest your comments on St. Mawgan as I had been there once many years ago. However, I was really disappointed, as I know many other will be, when I read your forecast for Fairford. This is one of my favorite flyfishing spots in the UK although I imagine this won't affect the Bull Hotel in town. All good things come to an end. |

Sadly, the USN presence at St Mawgan has ended. The drawdown was associated with the removal of NAVEUR London to Italy. I visited St Mawgan in an official capacity during the summer of 2007. Our three person TDY party (DoD contractors) drove down from RAF Lakenheath, it's pretty much an all day drive. I believe the small commissary and exchange closed last Summer. In 2007, the USN was still using a portion of the base, but billeting ops had already ceased. We had to stay in a commercial hotel in Newquay. It was very nice, and scenic, but it was also very expensive. The western Cornish coast is a popular British tourist designation. My memory fails a bit on cost, but I think our rooms ran North of 125 GBP, per person, per night! Full British breakfast included. The same thing will happen to RAF Fairford, at the end of this fiscal year. |

I used the "search tool" and read the entries below and haven't seen a review/posting for recent stays at the Navy Base in Cornwall, UK. Anybody have recent experiences there? How did you get there and how was the stay, etc. Thanks! |
