David's advice Re: making Gateway Inn reservations online (at dodlodging.net) when phone attemps tank also occasionally works the other way around (i.e., if the online effort flops, try calling 1-800-NavyBed). Been there, done that (several times).

For the benefit of others Tony's reference to "NL" is the "Navy Lodge."

If 956-821754 works then there must be a typo on their we site that shows that as a fax number!

a note: do NOT put a "0" in front of the spanish 9-digit phone number. that works only in the UK and some other countries.

hotel playa and their shared hotel Duque are NOT cheap. DuQue is closer in the town's center... playa is farther down abt a 15-min drive from terminal to hotel through town.

that is a great recommendation about Paco's Travel. he's been in business for over 30yrs(his shop was located across the street then from where they are now - always a waiting line unless you get in right after they open. all speak eng/span) and they DO get great prices on everything!

Mike,

The number listed on the Spacea.net Rota page should work - just drop the country code and add a zero - 0956-82-1871 instead of 34-956-82-1871

If you can't get a reservation by calling at Gateway, we found that you sometimes can get a reservation using DOD lodging, even if they say they do not have rooms. Crazy, but true. Reservations at the Navy Lodge are easier, but as stated below, not as nice as the Gateway and more expensive. It is a good back-up plan is you need to stay on base. David

Mike, make a reservation by calling Gateway Inn at Rota when you know you will be arriving.

If they tell you that they have no rooms, go to the desk anyway. May get a room. Even call from the terminal when you get off the plane.

The Navy Lodge (don't confuse this with Gateway Inn -- two different facilities on base) is over rated and expensive. per night $79.00 plus.

Hotel Playa De La Luz is nice hotel on beach; but, not within walking distance from terminal. Catch cab to get to it.

Other hotels in town can be walked to from terminal or quick cab ride.

Also, if you use Paco's travel agency in town, he will get you a discount for the hotel rates off base, including Rota.

Most people who use Paco's want the hotel/train/bus reservations made but they forget about getting a discount for the hotel they are staying in (in Rota town).

And if both the Gateway Inn and Navy Lodge are full, there are several hotels in town that have been recommended in the past. Try a "Search" for <Rota hotel> at the small magnifying glass above.

There is a nice Navy Lodge, but we found better rooms, actually a suite, around the corner at the former BOQ... now a Navy Gateway Inn for $45/night w/ two flat screen TVs, frig. big bath. It's a five minute walk from the terminal and the exchange complex, and a ten minute walk from the Rota gate. Call 1-877-NAVY-BED for reservations from the states or go online at https://navyreservations.dodlodging.net/
(info as of October 2009) Sam

Flying into Rota, Does anybody know where the best place to stay is. Is there a Navy Lodge on base? Thanks in advance, Mike.
