as a side note to this:

Redstone opened up new section of their RV park on base recently. It is located across the street from the exchange/commissary complex.

They built a new laundry room at the RV park.

In the next year or so they will be expanding the RV complex to include a community center.

The older RV park on the river is still there. It is a very long drive to get to it.

In Redstone Lodging as we speak on the way to Dover AFB, DE....two personnel with three (3) cats. Staying in the old housing off Spartan (two bedroom/one bath...plenty of room). Old....but livable...only drawback would be the lack of good internet, but that's not what we're here for right?

Was talking with one of the lodging personnel a couple of days ago and she told me that Redstone had finally got the go-ahead for two (2) 6-story hotel-type buildings. ABOUT TIME!!! With BRAC and all the other schools here....it's needed!

Kim and I don't want to leave, but we don't want to stay with who we're working for. In our visit to Dover a couple of weeks ago, I think we will have a great time....especially with the AMC Museum...they made me fly the "virtual B17" to prove I did it a year ago.

The "Crystal Ball" will be unavailable for awhile....hopefully not forever.

My wife and I have stayed at Redstone several times. We ended up in the buildings out by the golf course and they were nice and clean. They were in the $52 range instead of th $39 Navy/Air Force range, but the accomidations are good. I have also never stayed in the motel type rooms you speak of, but am aware of them.

We live near Redstone and out there often. We have not been in a room at the military hotel on base but it looks about like a lot of other military places we have stayed.

It is within walking distance of the PX and commissary, maybe a little over 1/4 mile. NCO club is also within walking distance. Officers and Civilian Club is a little further but walkable and there are sidewalks.

There are lots of places to eat on Redstone, the food court at the PX, fast food on the parking lot, bowling alley, clubs etc.

I would suggest staying at Redstone at first but would make a trip up to Arnold AFS at Tulluhouma TN. for a night or two.

As far as I know the only place to eat on base at Arnold is the golf course and they only serve breakfast and lunch and not every day.

There may be a cafeteria inside the HQ building.

Redstone borders SW Huntsville near the Space and Rocket Center. Arnold is in a rural area, very laid back with several tourist sites within a 45 min. drive.

I would not consider commercial lodging if I could get a room on base.

Cottages are being renovated and not yet finished....delayed (again and again) until at least July. Has anyone stayed in the motel-type rooms ($52) in the main building? I asked the rep if they were old and scary and she said, "well, maybe not real scary," but sounded like she was joking a bit. Our son will be attending space camp in Huntsville later this month and we'll be driving him down from Cincinnati and then picking him up six days later. Maybe we should we consider commercial lodging? Thanks for any advice!
