HI hostels might have good rates but the commute to St. Helena, CA will be brutal.

Dear Denny, you might check the HI hostels in the vicinity. They usually have private rooms, and it is a great experience. Please see the string about Hostels in this forum. Jim Coppens

Denny, often the bride's family arranges with a good local hotel to set aside a block of rooms to be available for guests to reserve at a special discounted rate if they respond by a certain deadline (after which the rooms are returned to open availability). If you are unsuccessful in finding appropriate nearby military lodging, I urge you to ask the hometown folks who are arranging the wedding what they recommend. (If they don't know about how easy it is to set up such a group rate, tell them to speak with the hotel's management -- it's been our experience that they are delighted to hold X number of rooms until a certain date, and do NOT exact a penalty if not all are actually reserved. AAMOF the reservations guy at a nearby Holiday Inn told me that he gets good marks with the organization simply for setting up such a block even if few actually take advantage of it!)

Besides being a great help to the out of town guests (such as you) who are unfamiliar with the area when someone has already scoped out the lodging alternatives and decided on which is best, it also greatly adds to the fun when a lot of the wedding guests are staying at the same place. AND this makes it easier for the family to provide directions to the ceremony and/or reception (or arrange for guests with cars to give rides to any who don't have wheels) since they can presume most people are starting from the same location -- the recommended hotel/motel.

Probably a toss up between Petaluma (USCG} or Travis (both approx 50 miles away).
