I think he is referring to Fort MacArthur. It is the lodging area for air force people who work at LAX. It is a former army post thus its name. I have stayed there, but do not know the area well enough to tell you where it is. It seems to me it is south of Long Beach. |

John D... what is the full name of "ft mac"? Is it an active army post? I looked at the army billeting website and found nothing in the San Pedro/LA area. Maybe it's not army? Details, please. |

Cherry: My wife & I took our 1st cruise in 2000 on the Sea Princess & have been on 4 more, the last in Apr '09 to the Pan.Canal with several stops before & after. We have also been on HAL once, Royal Carib. once & Seabourn once, the latter an all inclusive & really the only way to go, IMHO. Nevertheless Princess set the standard for us & has been generally excellent, altho on the last cruise to Pan. Canal our table with 3 other couples experienced extremely slow dining rm. service(1.5+ hrs to receive our main course) to the extent that several of my dining mates & I wrote complaints on our end of cruise critiques after complaining to both the head of all food service operations on the ship & to the head maitre'd. I'd say that from 2000 to the present Princess has declined somewhat in service & amenities, perhaps in an effort to control costs & expenses, nevertheless I'd sail on Princess again especially since we have achieved platinum status entitling us to several perks,e.g. captain's cocktail parties, special boarding/disembarking priviledges, etc. Have a great cruise; would like to hear how it goes when you return, esp. since we have made a deposit on a future Princess cruise. |

Tom and I have just signed up for the Golden Princess, leaving from the LA piers (actually, San Pedro?) on January 17 for a 14-day round trip to Hawaii (our first time on Princess).
Anybody else from here going?
Would VERY much appreciate suggestions on where to stay the night before (we plan to fly in to Long Beach via Jet Blue on the 16th, since once in a blue moon a winter storm causes airport delays from our area). We don't necessarily seek military lodging since we will be dependent on taxis or shuttle buses (not going to rent a car for such a short time). Would like to find a place with a free shuttle to the pier, choice of eateries nearby, 'reasonably' priced. Breakfast-included is optional. (Clean, safe, comfortable go without saying!)
Also, are there any interesting things to see nearby such as museum, aquarium, historic site? By "nearby" I mean short cab ride or walkable.
All advice is eagerly sought, especially from former Princess cruisers AND all you local Californians. Backchannel emails also welcomed! |
