In November we took a 5-day cruise out of Miami and stayed at the Red Roof Inn at the Miami Airport for about $80. Had a free breakfast and a shuttle ride to the cruise port terminal. Red Roof lets you leave your car in their parking lot for up to 14 days, even if you just stay one night. We had to take a taxi back to get our car but that was only $25. The Miami cruise port charges $20 a day for parking, so it would have cost us $100 just to park and we still would have spent the night in a hotel somewhere.

Another Galveston tid bit. If you have a DV license plate you can park ant the Galveston Port Authority (Galveston City Parking) without charge. Transportation from parking to dock provided.

rinaldo: your posting of Patrick AFB is the only one in the area is false. We are 3 hours/180 miles from Ft.Lauderdale/Miami area. Homestead Air Reserve Base is 30 miles south of Miami. That might be an option also.

Leaving out of Galveston?
Cruise departed on Saturday so we came in on Friday, stayed at Howard Johnston INN two miles from ship dock, left car at HJ with their permission--and took Taxi to ship next day. Reversed when we returned and it was the fasterst -in-out I have done in years. FYI

Thanks : I did call the Ft Lauderdale Naval Air Station museum and the guy said that there is a parking lot there for people flying out and I would be able to leave our car for the cruise. We opted out of the 20 day cruise however and decided to take the fall colors cruise out of Boston to Quebec city with a back to back cruise from Quebec City returning to Boston. We will be flying commercial to Boston and back to Tampa on this one. Leaves Oct 9 going to QC and then returns Oct 16 and arrives Boston on the 23. I will probably use the museum on next cruise out of Ft Lauderdale as it sounds like a good safe place to leave your car. Is anyone else aware of this location and have you used it before? Thanks to all: Dalton

CGAS Opalaka and CGS Star Island in Miami are possiblities. We live just north of Boca Raton and usually do a one-way rental. Hope this helps...

Dalton, you haven't said where you're coming FROM, but let's assume it's within a day's drive. A 20 day cruise is an expensive parking proposition ($15/day @ Port Everglades). Why not do a one-way rental car to/from your home to Ft. Lauderdale airport? It costs a lot less, and is completely worry-free about the safety/security of your own car. Set both rentals up at the same time. You turn the car in at the airport, then take the renta-car shuttle bus to the Port Everglades cruise terminal (free). When you return from the cruise, you'll take the shuttle back to the airport and your rental will be waiting. Voile! I checked this out for myself from Jacksonville, FL to Ft Lauderdale. As of two weeks ago, Budget had the best one-way rate of the majors for this kind of trip from my area. Break-even for one-way rentals is a ten day trip, so for 20 days you make out very well. I chose the rental method for a ten day cruise simply for the peace of mind of leaving my car in the security of my own garage. Sounds like a great cruise...have fun.

Does anyone know of a safe place to leave your car near Ft Lauderdale. We will be going for 20 days. Are there any Coast Guard or Navy installations nearby that allow you to leave your vehicle for that amount of time. Thanks Dalton
