Jim - You don't state whether or not you booked your cruise through a travel agency or the cruise company or not. I would agree with Robert about checking in for your cruise at the convention center. We cruised from Seward to Vancover, but Princess made all the arrangements for flight, bus from Anchorage to Seward on Hwy 1 & 6. It stopped several times for us to stretch and view the wildlife. We made the trip in June, arrived in Seward at 11:30 PM, but it seemed to be the middle of the day. Good Luck. |

There are no hotels in Whittier. As someone suggested - fly in the day before - get a hotel with shuttle to/from the airport and arrange transport through the cruiseline. You can also select a hotel close to the train station and purchase your own ticket. Train is the best/easiest if you only planning a day or 2 beforehand. |

Here's my two cents: We also flew into Anchorage the day before the cruise and stayed at a Hilton Garden Hotel. We took the hotel shuttle from the airport to the hotel and then the next morning we took the hotel shuttle back to the airport where we met the cruise line “transfer” shuttle. We had pre-purchased the transfer to the cruise ship from the cruise line. The cruise line provided a nice tour bus that made a stop at a wildlife preserve to use up some time as the tunnel to get into Whittier is though a one way tunnel, shared with the railroad. If I remember, it is open on the hour for travel in one direction then on the half hour, the other direction. The drive from Anchorage to Whittier is very scenic. I’m not sure what type of lodging facilities is available in Whittier; it is a pretty small place. Your best bet would probably be to stay in Anchorage. I am certain you will enjoy your cruise! |

Based upon my experience taking a cruise from Whittier: As Ann stated you could take the train from Anchorage, but I don't believe there are very many hotels/motels nor restaurants in Whittier. It is very small town.If driving you have go through a railroad tunnel. You would probably be better off checking in for your cruise at the convention center in Anchorage(if arriving days prior to cruise), or making other arrangements through your cruise line to make hotel and transportation requirements. Anchorage to Whittier is a pretty easy drive. We stayed at Elmendorf in last August, and drove past the Whittier turn off to go to Seward and Homer and Kenai. Then drove by the turn off a few days later on our way to Denali National Park. We never actually went to Whittier, but it was a fairly short drive. You can also take the train to Whittier from Anchorage, but whether that would work would depend on when your cruise departed. We used Hertz, could drop off at the Anchorage Airport for no extra charge, or a $35 charge to leave at the Elmendorf terminal, and found them quite helpful (book through USAA), but I do not know if they have drop off at Whittier. We plan to do the same cruise one of these days, so look forward to your trip report! Ann |
