Tony, have you considered one of the Exploritas (was "Elderhostel" -- recent name change may or may not catch on!) small-ship cruises of the Greek Islands? They probably would not be as luxurious as the big ships, but could be much more interesting. See their website at http://www.exploritas.org/ for all offered trips.

(We have taken more than a dozen Elderhostels over the years, both domestic and foreign, and found them to be terrific both in subject matter and quality of our fellow travelers. Almost as nice a bunch of people as you meet going space-a!)

We did a Greek Isles cruise out of Venice, and loved Venice, too. We sailed on Costa and our experience was average, though the itinerary was great. People loved the MSC and Royal Carribean lines and Royal Carribean has a great Greek Isles tour out of Rome, that includes Turkey.

Tony,
For the most part, if you want a cruise of the GREEK ISLANDS, use Athens. Barcelona, and Genoa for the most part only do the Med ports.

I have done both Greek Island cruise (out of Athens) and Med cruise (out of Genoa). Both were great - albeit my memories of these 1980s might be jaded - or better/worse than cruises of today.

Ciao
Wanda

For the celebration of our 40th Anniversary, we're looking forward to a cruise through the Greek Islands during the months of April or May 2010. We need information regarding the following:

1. Which of the most common ports would be more convenient to leave from, Barcelona (Spain) Venice, Civitavecchia (Rome), Genoa (Italy) or Athens, Greece?

2. Where can I find the best deals?

Your assistance would be appreciated.

If anyone would like to email us their experiencies, we would appreciate it.

Happy travels!
