Ryan Air’s rules are 15 kilos (33 pounds), per person, for checked baggage and 15 kilos (22 pounds) for carry-on luggage. They weighed our checked baggage, but no one checked the weight of our carry-on.

George: Are you still limited to 30 lbs each on Ryan Air?

Made it home today! Lady luck was with us. We drove from Holland down to Ramstein yesterday and our first stop was the passenger terminal. We were told they had seats to Dover if we could get out stuff together in 10 minutes. We did, and made the flight. When we arrived at Dover we shared a van with a couple GI’s to BWI, picked up a rental car and found a motel room (no rooms in any of the local military bases).

We enjoyed meeting everyone - we’ll have to this again.

Diane, glad to hear you made it OK.

For anyone that’s interested. We flew Ryan Air from Barcelona to Hahn. Ryan Air uses Girano airport for Barcelona flights. To get to the airport from a cruise ship, catch the terminal bus to the Columbus statue. From there, walk about a half block up Las Rambles to the Espanya metro station and take the red line to the Arc de Triomf station. The bus to Girano departs from the Estacion de Autobuses de Barcelona Norte, which is about a block from the metro. The busses are operated by Sagales, which is located at the far end of the bus station. It’s about a 1¼ hour trip to the airport.

The bus station has lockers to store luggage. At the airport, we ate at the large cafeteria on the first level. When we went upstairs to the second floor, where the gates are located, we found there were a couple restaurants that looked like they had a better selection of food.

We’re touring the Netherlands and I’ll post more when we get home.

We arrived in Barcelona on Sat.and took the Ave(fast) Renfe train to Seville. It took 5 1/2 hrs., taxied to bus station and the bus arrived in Rota outside the gate. Told no lodging available, except when we showed up at the Gateway Inn,a room was found in building 29. Queen sized bed after all. Left Rota on Monday to Dover instead of Charleston. At Dover now.

So far, it looks like we are taking the late train on Sat. to Seville. We'll tour there and catch the bus to Rota. This is our third try getting to Rota, hope we make it this time. Anyone with experience on buying train tickets via web?

Just booked a Ryan Air flight from Barcelona to Hahn for the 24th of April. It arrives at Hahn at 23:35, so we’re staying in a hotel next to the airport. We’re picking up a rental car on Sunday and probably heading to Holland to see the tulips before going to Ramstein.

Anyone else have firm plans when they get to Barcelona?

Madiera has had major flooding. So bad ship might not stop. Check it out (not that you can do anything about it). Sled ride is great but I doubt it is running.

We did a Princess cruie last yr to The Panama Canal & brought my tux; I think there were many tuxs worn. I think Cherry has it right that becuase the airlines, except for SWA & maybe Jet Blue, charge for bags, many foks are skipping the tux & maybe formal long dresses. We'll have more on this when we cruise on RC in a couple of months. I think that dressing formally on formal nights is nice; everyone looks great.

On our cruise over to South Hampton last year two guys showed up on formal night with longsleeve T shirt with the front painted like a tux, they had no problem eating inthe dinning room. We were on RC and like Cherry said it has got very relaxed in the last few years. As the air lines keep adding charges for bags, I think the cruise lines will smart enough to know folks aren't going to pack all that stuff, some may still rent it, but most will just make it work best they can.

George (and others "traveling light") we observe that the "formal nights" on cruise ships are getting less and less formal, at least on some itineraries. It may pay to check with the cruise line for their definition of "formal" because just last month we took a Princess cruise from LA to Hawaii and back, that had 3 such nights. When I inquired ahead of time, I was told that a blazer, dark slacks, dress shirt and regular necktie would be fully acceptable in the main dining room, and we were very interested to see that all 4 (experienced at cruising) men at our assigned table were in just such a getup (actually, one was in a suit but all were wearing standard neckties, not even bow ties, along with their standard shirts).

Therefore it is highly likely that if you wear a blazer as you travel (thereby eliminating the need to (a) pack it and (b) press out the wrinkles after arrival) you could very well participate in the formal nights IF you wished to do so. My husband has a wrinkle-resistant woll blend "travel blazer" with extra pockets that we got from Travelsmith or Magellan, and it makes him look great, keeps him warm, and makes him appear civilized even after an overnight redeye flight. (We think we get better service from airline personnel, too, if we look a little dressed up!)

We women have been able to "get away with" a dressy blouse and slacks on "formal night" for a long time, so I am glad to see that the men are being cut a little more slack.

BTW, on the Princess cruise just mentioned I saw hardly any tuxedos! Perhaps it was partly because of our tropical destination, but I suspect that all the barriers are being lowered these days.

Diane,
We haven’t decided what we’re going to do when we get to Barcelona either. We’re not going to participate in the formal nights. We’re traveling light.

Still haven't decided how to get back to Rota from Barcelona. Found out there are 2 formal nights on this cruise, Day 3 and 8.

Diane,
We encountered the same timing problem that you mention when we arrived back in Barcerlona. The ship was aware of it as well, and they had an early bus going to the airport to accomodate (sp) those with early flights, i.e., Veuling flight to Jerez. We had plenty of time to make the flight.

Is anyone trying to go home Spacea out of Rota. Any suggestions. I have looked at Vueling Air but the Saturday flight leaves Barcelona at 11:25 AM. Might not be enough time to get to airport after disembarcation. Any thoughts?

You folks who are doing this cruise should take the sledge ride in Madiera. We did this when we stopped there and it was so much fun, and a bit scary. I'm sure the ship will offer it, but we did it on our own. We headed to the cable car, ask for senior rate, took it to the top and than walk a little way, stopping in some gardens along the way. We got our ticket there, this is a wicker basket type sledge that goes down the city street. Mid way down they stops to regrease the blades. It stops half way down the mountain, and you can get a cab the rest of the way. We walked, but it was a long walk, all down hill, which sound easy, but wasn't. This port was high in price on the linen products we saw. It is a lovely town, enjoy.

Go to Disney Cruise Home Page and type in Special Offers. There you will find military specials. They are showing a Cat. 6 for $999 on the repositioning cruise to Barcelona, which is a balcony, I believe. Vacationstogo is showing $699 for an inside cabin. We have used them and were very satisfied with the service. All done by phone and email, without a hitch.

The Disney site shows that the total cost for the cruise is $2005.76. But that’s for two passengers and includes taxes of $99.76, a $376 optional vacation insurance charge and a $130 optional ground transportation fee. I passed on the insurance and I know I can get a rental car for $30-$40 from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, so I I didn’t buy the ground transportation.

The only military discount I see for the cruise was a Category 6 room for $999.

How are you finding this particular cruise? The website from George's post comes up with an error so I can get no further. Have haunted Vacations To Go with no luck. Disney's website shows it at $2,000pp. ???
Last Spring we took a HAL transatlantic with a balcony (Mar 13-Apr 1 Ft.L to Rome/ 18 days)We enjoyed the balcony everyday on that trip.
Thanks for your help.

We're thinking about going on this cruise and I read somewhere that a Military rate for a balcony on this cruise is $999. It may be too cold in Europe to use the balcony at this time of year but not in the Carribean . We have taken 4 Disney cruises(only one with children) and we loved all of them!

George, Did you notice that they have a military rate (includes retired) of $599 for this cruise. This is sounding really good since I live less than an hour from Port Canaveral. My recollection is that Disney Ships are highly rated too.
