We are going on a cruise to Alaska with Holland America in August and are interested in information on 'photographic excursions'. I would like to know if anyone has arranged an excursion like this aside from the one that Holland America offers. The name of the tour they offer is called Photo Safari by Land & Sea. Would appreciate any info. Thanks! Barbara |

We've also done the Seward to Vancouver on Holland America but did however have an oceanview cabin and felt that the best views were from the crows nest. There is wonderful scenery from both sides of the ship most of the way anyhow. We flew Jax to Eilsen then there to Elmendorf(don't miss the Iditarod dining hall). We recommend the train from Anchorage to Seward Fabulous trip about 4 hours and arrives across from the cruise ships. We stayed overnight at the Seward Army resort and it was great as we also had time for the aquarium and glacier in that area. After arriving in Vancouver we took the metro to Amtrak (they bused us to Everett train station in Wa.)then ferry to Whidbey and flew to Jax from there. This was one of our best cruises ever and as all before stated Holland America is really nice. |

If you want the best weather in Alaska and the most beauty, try coming up here in July/August. It never gets that hot up here. |

Janet: Have to concur with Cherry going from the north to the south & securing a balcony on the portside while doing so. I did it on the Princess line for an 11 day landcruise. Princess has wonderful lodges in which to stay during the land portion of the landcruise. All transportation is provided by Princess as is the train from Denali Nat Pk to Whittier where you board the ship. I went in late May into June when the wheather was mild. I'd do again in a heart beat. |

Years ago a travel agent explained to me why HE advises clients to do a north-to-south Alaskan cruise instead of the other way around. We followed his advice and after comparing notes with others who did not, were very glad we did it his way. Reasons: 1) If you are combining the cruise with a land tour (highly recommended!), the tour although wonderful will be somewhat tiring. Much better to have the cruise at the END so you can rest up after your land sightseeing, instead of being all rested on the cruise and then thrown into the hurly-burly of the land arrangements. 2) Air connections TO Anchorage and Fairbanks from the Lower 48 are much better than FROM those cities back to your home. If you take the north-to-south tour you will wind up in Vancouver or Seattle, from which travel connections are excellent to anywhere in the country. But if you end up at the north end you will have poorer connections when going home. P.S. Do splurge for the bslcony cabiny! And if possible get one on the 'land' side for best vistas -- that is, port side if going south, starboard side if heading north. |

Janet: We also have been on two Alaskan cruises...both with Holland America (top notch). One was a south to north route (Vancouver to Seward) and the other was a r/t out of Vancouver. Totally agree with Phyllis...this is the cruise to splurge on a balcony cabin! Also bring your camera and binoculars...this is a nature cruise with the most spectacular scenery. Favorite stops are Sitka and Skagway (don't miss the train!). Enjoy your cruise. John |

We used Holland America do the two we did, enjoyed both of them very much. We had a balacony and on this cruise I would say it is the best room to have. Since you spend 1/2 day in the bay watching the ice bergs, you can do this on your own deck in a nice chair and they even had two blankets for us to use while outside. We were there in May one time late August the other, and the blankets were a nice touch. The best one was the cruise that went to the town of Haines. Haines is nothing to get excited about, very very small, but getting there was wonderful. The waterway was so narrow and the scenery so beautiful if we ever do a third one it will be that one again. If you are going to do land & cruise, one thing Princess has that makes it nice is laundry room on each floor. That way you don't have to pack so much for the trip. |

My husband and I want to do an Alaskan Cruise this summer, as many of you may have been on one, is there any Cruise Line that stands out better and shows you more intersting things or are they all about the same. They do seem to go to the same stops on the way. We will hopefully Space A from down her in FL, if any one has any info it would be much apreciated. |
