Bill, If you are looking for more than just a list then try this link - it can be setup so that anyone can edit or it can be restricted to a certain few folks later. You can list folks as one line per family or one person per line (better for head counts etc...) Try it out and decide which method you want to use - simple list in the current thread or spreadsheet. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AmuCnjddbYQUdFAySTY2Z0xRTlA1WFBpVV9DejEz RkE&hl=en |

Phil & John: Thanks for your input. The 2009 S&S was my first one. I am posting ideas that I have for 2010. My intent is to have a list where the attendees can sign on & as events are scheduled people that want to attend the event would mark a spread sheet or other list format. As I said previously I want to help with the planning but have few computer skills. Thanks again, Bill Mac |

If all you want to do is keep a simple list then there's no need for a spreadsheet or word doc (unless you want to use it for more than just a list). For a simple list just use the current "Attendee" thread for RSVPs ONLY (place comments or questions in another thread. If you plan to attend then just copy and paste the list to a new entry in the current "Attendee" thread (using one of the formats below) and add your name(s) to the list - keep it simple. 1. Denny & Evi Knott 2. Tom & Janet Jackson 3. Phil & Sandi Doubleman 4. Carl & Gail Corbitt or 1. Denny & Evi Knott 2. Evi Knott 3. Tom Jackson 4. Janet Jackson 5. Phil Doubleman 6. Sandi Doubleman 7. Carl Corbitt 8. Gail Corbitt |

If whoever is going to be the keeper of "the list" just use a Google Docs Spreadsheet and give everyone viewing rights. |

I can make the spreadsheet in Word or Excel and upload it as an attachment. But as it was updated, another attachment would be required. We could end up with lot of attachments in a thread. Is that OK? In any case, if someone has a better idea of displaying the list, I could still create the list and post it their way. Let me know the best way to do it. |

I would like to suggest that someone volunteer to prepare a spread sheet of the names of the people that plan to attend the 2010 S&S & post it on the board. I apologize for asking someone else to do it but I am not computer savy enough to prepare & post a spread sheet. All comments appreciated regarding the 2010 S&S. |

Hi Phil, Leta and I will be comming to Fort Worth to go to the S&S. Sometimes FT. Worth has flights that go to Sig & Souda Bay. If not will look for a flight to Norfolk then over or a one way rental to Charleston or Dover. The navy will manafest you all the way even if there is a RON. Remember NO box lunch on Navy flights. While I would have prefered dates other than the ones when I'll be in Malta, we can at least join in for the farewell dinner on Sun Oct 10. Can we bring a civilian couple traveling with us to the dinner? Liz/Frank |

What/where are the bases that have routine (not necessarily regular) direct flights to Sigonella? Also, what might be an indirect route? For example, I have gotten to Sigonella from Dover through Rota. |

Bill, John D. says I have to wait for Dirk to set up the separate Topic. First task is to set up dates. Bill, is there a reason you are locked into October 1? Does that coincide with the Patriot Express? My read is the Patriot Express runs from Norfolk weekly approximately on Wednesday, or leaving on September 29. That would coincide with a Friday start, October 1. However, the group in Rota last year, felt there was a benefit of waiting until after the beginning of th fiscal year. The earlier shift was to accommodate Uncle Bud. He is not coming now. So, I think we should get input from all of the prospective travelers. My vote is to delay a week with start, Thursday October 7. But, let's see if we get a separate Topic before we get the discussion. David |

David: Thanks for your input. I followed up by posting a request on Problems With The Message board requesting a 2010 S&S TOPIC. There are several other members (Bill D.,Paul B. Phil D. Phyllis D.) who I have been in touch with about the 2010 S&S and they are willing to contribute to planning and the discussion. So it is time for those planning to attend the 2010 S&S or for those who would like to share their experiences about Sigonella, S&S etc. with the board to particpate in the planning so that we can get the ball rolling. How about we start the 2010 S&S discussion by discussing the dates Friday October 1 thru Tuesday Ocotber 5, 2010 for the 2010 S&S. Looking forward to seeing your comments & suggestions. BILLMAC |

Bill, I am relatively new, too. Your suggestion is on the mark. I think the system administrator needs to set up a separate Topic for S&S 2010. I am not sure who that is. But, I will try. Last time I was in Sigonella was in 1974 for one RON. Can't say I remember much except how beautiful the area was with orange trees and the view of Mt. Etna. So, I am not much help on Sigonella. David, I think it is time to change the heading S&S 2009 on the main page to S&S 2010. Do you know how to do it? Or will someone do it. I will do what I can to "head up" the S&S 2010 but as a newcomer to Space A I will only make suggestions/recommendations. So, I do think we need some members to step up & speak up about the dates of the S&S; what they would like to do, bus tours, dinners, parties etc. at the S&S. And I will see what can be done. |

Bill, thanks for running with this. We have the S&S 2010 penciled in. My understanding for the logic of starting after October 1, was that in the new fiscal year there might be more flights outbound from the US. Thus, the S&S start on October 6th sounds better to me. David |

Bill - October is fine with me. 1 Oct through? Since the previous S&S's usually ran Wed-Sun, maybe 6-10 Oct? Other the hand, you might want to end the festivities to coincide with the Patriot Express heading home? |

We plan to try & get to Souda Bay after May 8th. Should we have to layover in Sigonella for a few days I will do some groundwork for the 2010 S&S. Try & locate a reliable travel agent for tours get recommendations for resturants to meet etc. If we set the 2010 S&S date soon perhaps we can start planning tours, events etc. We enjoyed the 2009 S&s in Rota & I am sure with some planning we can have good Spaghetti & Spumoni in Sigonella. I like Oct 1. Anyone else on board with Oct 1? |

With so many board (bored?) readers in Spain or planning to head that way, sounds like a good time to have a Spring S&S. Just don't plan on getting a place to stay on base. No, we won't make it, can't get out of the UK.

Bill, I think who ever takes this on, should have a good working knowledge of the area. What tours are there, how to get from one base to the other, which base would work best for us. We have only been there once for a couple days, and I was not all that impressed with it. I know there has to be someone on here who can do it this year for Bud. |

Phyliss I agree. The reasons for early Oct sound reasonable to me. I also don't want to be in charge but maybe we can get it started with input from the board. If Peggy & I get to Sig in April as we plan I will follow up on Uncle Bud's offer & get his input. Maybe I can lay some ground work for the S&S. Anyone else traveling to Sig this year can also look into some specifics for us. |

NO way do I want to be in charge of this, but do have a thought, sure this is not news to most of you. Last year we talked about moving this till after Oct. 1, so the new year would be under way for the goverment. When Bud got home he found out that wouldn't work for him, so we went with so we stayed with the same date. Now that Bud woun't be able to make it at all, let's think about moving it it as was talked about last year. |

I'm going to go along with Elizabeth K on the dates for the Sunshine & Spumoni 2010 in Sigonilla, Italy. Wed 29 Sep thru Sun 03 Oct. I'm pretty sure that the Patriot Express will still be moving personnel through to Sig and Souda even during the end of the fiscal year. Then after the start of the new fiscal year people should have an easier time going home as the flights will pick up then. A lot of people come early to the get together and there should not be too much trouble getting there in late Setember. I can be overriden by a popular vote. Don, you're correct. According to Ryanair's route map, Stansted, Milan, and Pisa flights go to Palermo, and about 20 of their other points of origin fly to Trapani. |

Bill, I did some searching a few weeks ago just in case we ever happen to get to Sigonella area. I came up with Palermo is the place that Ryanair flies from in Sigonella to Stantsted. That might not work for people getting into Ramstein, but would work for us if and when we decide to try. |

Yes, Barbara and I are planning on attending. Plan A for most of us will most likely be a C-5 or C-17 (or Patriot Express) from one of the East coast bases to Rota, Naples, Souda Bay, and then on to Sigonella. However, if you want to consider Ryanair’s low-cost, advance-purchase fares from Frankfurt Hahn, here is one Plan B option that I researched. Based on the difficulty of some SPATS trying to get to the 2009 Rota S&S, where Rota flights “dried up” while Ramstein flights were plentiful, this could become “Plan A” for some of us. Presently, Ryanair flies from Frankfurt Hahn to Trapani (Sicily) on Mondays and Thursdays (LV Hahn 10:25 AR Trapani 13:30), and on Fridays (LV Hahn 18:25 AR Trapani 21:30). The airport of Trapani is actually 13 km south of Trapani in Birgi (Input “Birgi, Italy” on Google earth). Birgi is a military airport opened to the civil traffic, and Ryanair uses it because “Handling tariffs are 30-40% less than tariffs applied in other Sicilian airports”. The good news (or bad news), depending on how you view it, Birgi is 326 km west of Catania. It’s an opportunity to see the entire island of Sicily on your trip to Catania, especially if you arrive in Trapani on the earlier flight (Mon & Thurs). Assuming you will not rent a car and will take public transportation… Take the AST bus from Birgi to Trapani. AST (Azienda Siciliana Transporti): http://www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it/ Trapani/Paceco/AEROPORTO BIRGI/Paceco/Trapani aziendasicilianatrasporti.it/opencms/opencms… You could also taxi from the airport to Trapani. Taxi from Birgi to Trapani will cost €30 – 20 minutes. The bus would cost €2.10 – 45 minutes. Take the Segesta (Interbus) from Trapani to Palermo (2 hours): http://www.interbus.it/ Then take the SAIS bus from Palermo to Catania (02h40). SAIS Autolinee: http://www.saisautolinee.it/ If you were to rent a car at Birgi, it would take 03h 32 to drive the 326kms to Catania. Check driving routes on ViaMichelin. ViaMichelin: viamichelin.com/viamichelin/…MaHomePage.htm From Catania to NAS I or II, see John D’s NAS Sigonella information sheet for Ground Transportation. Maybe some of you can suggest other Plan B routes to Sigonella. |

The weather in October should be in the 70s. Still not bad considering we will be coming from Alaska. It still works for us. |

Another Vote for Sigonella. Let's hope PR makes next year's S&S. "Sunshine and Spumante" seems the right thing to call next year's event. As Uncle Bud noted, the group of about 40 at Paddy's overwhelmingly supported Sigonella for next year. Let's hope we can all get their. David |

Although we couldn't make it to Rota for this year's S&S, we will make it to Sig for 2010. It's one of our favorite places. |

Hey Uncle Bud, Since you and I have already talked about this & you know our feelings on the matter, I'm just posting this to publicly add our "vote" for Sunshine & Spaghetti next year. It was great seeing you all, we enjoyed your company and we're now back in Charleston. Ken & Julia Coates |

Uncle Bud is right on with more monies being available/spent in the first part of a fiscal year. Any financial analyst will tell you more funds are spent in the first quarter of a fiscal year than in any other quarter. Funding is managed a lot of better the further you get into a fiscal year. A lot of things don't happen during the last quarter of a fiscal year due to lack of fundsing. Happy Travels. |

OK, I'll relent. If we can't have "S&S 2010" in New Mexico, Sandi and I will go to Sigonella like everybody else. We'll be disappointed, but we'll go. :~] |

The Magic of the new fiscal year is there is now more money available for PerDiem for Air Crews, fuel and many other things that may not be available right at the end of the fiscal year. |

Hi again, Uncle Bud here, still in the terminal waiting for the C17 to be fixed, then launch off to McChord. I talked to Phyllis this morning and she also suggested that we put off the "Sigonella S&S 2010 (Sunshine & Spumante)" reunion until after the 1st of October when the new fiscal year begins. It looks like Don Miller feels the same and I too agree. What do you all think? Uncle Bud www.unclebud.net Make Every Trip an Adventure |

Bud, the only person who wanted it to move to another place was Phil. He said we should have it in New Mexico. Well the weather might be close. My sugestion will have it a week or so later. But I am happy to move from here. |

As much as Linda and I love to travel and see new places, we realize that the friends we have made along the way are what are really important to us. We are sorry we were not able to meet up with you folks at Rota. We were there in the spring for the first time and loved it. Count us in for the 2010 S&S reunion in Sigonella, Italy. Maybe we can check it out in April/May. |

Uncle Bud, The idea of changing sites every two/three years is excellent and a good opportunity to enjoy other cultures. My suggestion for S&S in Sigonella would be: Sigonella S&S 2010 (Sunshine & Spumante). Regards to all and happy travels! |

OK Folks, after talking to many folks at the Olive Pit Thursday night, it was suggested that for next year we move our S&S reunion to Sigonella, Italy. It seems that it may well be a little more Retiree friendly. We can use the NEX and Commissary and there are Gateway Inns and suites at both NAS 1 (The support site with the Large NEX and Commissary and NAS 2 (The PAX terminal site). There is a Naval shuttle bus that runs many times during the day and evening between both bases. A City bus now runs from NAS 2 to Catania (the nearest city) and returns many times a day. At the present time Retirees are still fed at the dining hall. A poll was taken at Paddy’s Bar Friday night and it was almost unanimous that we try Sigonella next year It has been suggested that the S&S be renamed from “Sunshine and Sangria” to “Sunshine and Spaghetti” if this suggestion is accepted. Any other names would be welcomed. I’m not volunteering to set this up am just posting information and asking for input, from the group. Uncle Bud |
