DeeDee: noticed you have cruised in and out of Southampton. Will be cruising to Southampton in late April. What can we expect when we arrive there as far as things to see and do once we disembark? What about lodging such as B&Bs? Any good ones? We plan on working our way to RAF Mildenhall for a space a flt back to CONUS. Does this sound feasible to you? Any suggestions or recommendations? Ken

I just noticed a low priced transatlantic cruise, the Voyager of the Seas out of Galveston sailing to Barcelona on April 27, 2008. That may be the cruise talked about here in the past. An inside room is now priced at $459 for the 13 night cruise on the military rates at www.absea.com, not such a bad deal, even after adding tips and taxes.

John - We have cruised Southampton to NYC and NYC to Southampton. The NYC to Southampton was last May/June. It was very warm when we left, and there were guys out sunning by the pool that day. However, during the crossing it was too cold to be by the outside pool. It could also be quite windy while walking on the decks outside.

We didn't have rough seas, but the motion of the ship sure did make it easy for me to sleep all the time.

John, June 1st is the first day of hurricane season in the Atlantic, not sure about the Pacific. So I would say yes you would have been sea in the spring. My husband is retired Navy, most of it east coast, many crossing on all types of ships. The worse he ever had was in December. Three storm from the med to Norfolk. He said they never ate a hot meal, only cold food on paper plates. Also the Atlantic is calmer than the Pacific, I think, We had no trouble getting back to the east coast from the trip.

DeeDee-If we try and bit off one of these relocation cruises, I was looking at the ones that went to either Eng. or Spain, likely leaving from either Galv. or Miami, as both are about the same Airfair.

Phyllis- Sounds like you either are blessed, lucky or both. Would there be the likelyhood of calmer seas just because you cruised in April and we cruised in Dec?

Anyone else have some imput?

John, my husband and I have done a transatlantic crossing the last two years from Galveston. I would say we had good seas both times. Now I take the patch with me, just in case, but have not used it. The first year we even sat out on the pool deck in the evening watching movies. The cruise line provided blankets to put over you, and we did. The days were warm, not hot, and we were out on deck much of the time. It was a nice experience.

John - Which cruise are you looking at? Is it a northern or southern crossing? That will make a difference as far as weather is concerned.

Question to all of you cruise veterans, having crossed the Atlantic one or more times. How bad did the seas get during a late winter/early spring translantic cruise. Were most of the days nice? Or were many of them stormy with rough seas?

We have cruised the last two years during early Dec. on Carnival and have had rough seas on both cruises (this year Mexico from San Diago, last year W. Carb.via Galveston, TX) We were not allowed to dock in Encinata this year with 20' waves hitting in San Diago reported. Last year, I recall seeing waves jump up out of the ship's pool 5'-7' during a couple of rough days at sea. Each time was rough on my wife. I faired better last year during these rough periods on the trip. My wife did better with Sea Sick Pills but still was far from up to par. This year, both of us left the ship in San Diago with woobbly legs and feeling queezy for the next 3-4 days once off the ship.

All this jut to say, is 14 days on a repositioning cruise with only a few stops worth it? We both enjoyed ship life overall with the good food, and we mostly enjoyed the entertainment, though we are normally not the party down, big show groupy types. We are both still in our 50's and in very good health otherwise so it is not like we are too feeble to handle it. Or all of you guys and gals old sea dogs having shipped in and out of every port in the free world?

Like many of you, the price of around $50/day is very appealing, but it is $50/day to much if you are feeling the effects of sea sickness.

Couple of other things:
1.What are opinions on the best form of anti-sea sick stuff (ie pills, patches, strap on barf bags!)
2. Carnival's on board entertainment leaves a bit to be desired, not talking about the "show", but rather the stuff that helps fill the days at sea. "Harry Chest Competition", Sports/binge drinking, Gluttony, etc. all leave a bit to be desired. I know Carnival is a ship for the masses, but other than working out, running/walking, reading and relaxing, what do others of you like the most about cruise activities?

Comments appreciated? One at a time or all at once if you feel like sharing.

Janet: Recently booked our 7th cruise, 6 in the Carib, 1 Whittier-Vancouver; have had inside, window & balcony; a translant in April on a balcony would be too cool for me, esp when the ship is going some 20 kts & the breeze is on your side. A balcony in the Carib is different. Have to agree with dinotars. Have made some 10 translants while wearing a blue suit. JMHO.

Janet, I just looked at the ports you will visit, and I would go for the outside. The past two years we have a cruise from Galveston to Europe, both time did the outside. This year we only took a room with a window, but wish we had had the balcony. I like to watch the water, the ships pass ect. The ports you are going to look very nice, and you could enjoy leaving port on your own "deck." The site I looked at had a difference of $200 per person, for me it would boil down to weather I would like the money for something else, or my own little space.

I wouldn't pay the extra for a balcony on a transtlantic cruise. There are too many things to do on board and plenty of locations to enjoy the view from the deck.In addition it may be too cool for the need for a balcony.Better to use the money saved for other travel requirements.

we are looking at the transatlantic on Norwegian Jewel that leaves Miami on April 20th and ends up in Dover U.K has anyone had any experience or been on this cruise in the past,is it worth paying extra for a balcony seeing you are out at sea 6 days it is probably to cold to sit out there.

Another reason not to rent a car in Ireland is that many credit cards won't cover your insurance there even though they do so in most other countries--so even if you meet their age requirements, do double-check with your credit card about taking the CDW (Collision Damage Waiver).

Jerry: I don't think any of us gave any thought about car rental restrictions. Will have to check into that. Thanks for the "heads up" on this. If we are restricted by that then I guess we will have to put plan "B" into action, whatever that may be.

Thanks for the info, Ken. We've put the kibosh on our trip after checking with the car rental folks and being told that because of age we wouldn't be able to rent a car in Ireland unless we had umpteen affidavits from doctors, insurance companies, etc. It isn't worth the hassle to us.

Jerry: sorry for the late post but generally don't look at this site. Concerning repositioning cruise, my wife and I, along with two other spat couples are taking a Royal Caribbean transatlantic cruise out of Miami on April 14, 08. It ends up in England with at least one stop in Cork, Ireland (of course there are several other stops involved). We then plan to travel around England and Ireland working our way to Mildenhall for a return trip to CONUS. If you have not already scheduled something you might want to check this out.

Am considering taking a repositioning ride in the spring and Carnival has one leaving Ft. Lauderdale in April heading for Rome. We might use that to take a semi-planned jaunt to Ireland.

Tom, we took the Celebrity Constellation from Ft. Lauderdale to Southampton last April. We really like the Celebrity line-the ships are clean and well maintained, the staff are unfailingly polite and helpful and the food is really goooood! There are activities to appeal to every taste, from arts 'n crafts to bridge to computers to lectures from authorities in their fields ( we have heard from astronauts, opera singers, diplomats,...)..Their prices are competitive and the transatlantic cruises can be had for under $100/day/person.

The days at sea went too fast for me, being an old ship driver, but the ports were interesting too. The ship's shore excursions are generally too expensive for what they offer (true of all cruise lines) and often similar or better/cheaper tours can be arranged online or ashore.

We plan to look for a Celebrity transatlantic next spring, having done 3 already. Making this part of a SPATS get together seems ideal. Space-A'ing back has not been a problem. We always try to stay a week or so where ever the ship ends up--this has been Italy, Spain and lastley, England. Since we are ahead of the schools we never waited more that a day to get out.

Hey guys - Didn't we have a quite few folks that were taking Transatlancic cruises in April? Well because of your plans and me mentioning to my wife about the number of folks doing it this year, guess where we are going next year?

So guys/gals, I need your help. I would like to hear some reports about the various ships, destinations, likes and dislikes about the cruise and why you picked that particular cruise line instead of another one. Also could you include getting back home, was it Space-A or commerical. Did that influence your final destination?

The wife said, "take care of it", so I would appreciate anything that will help me in making the right choice.

We finally got on a ship for Barcelona out of Miami for 21 April. Arrival in Barcelona is 3 May. We may see some of you there. We plan on staying there for a couple of days and the making our way to Rota.

We are in a Superior Suite with a possible upgrade to a suite if we are lucky. There were only two left.

Happy travels

My wife & I are also booked for the Galveston - Barcelona cruise. We took the $549.00 guaranteed outside view room. Our package arrived today and it shows they put us on Deck 6. Seems to be a nice room and location. Hope to see you all there!

Looks like we'll be flying Austin to Houston on Continental for $49 one way and catching the shuttle to Galveston for $45 per person right to the ship.

Two weeks+ on the ship, a week browsing Spain, and hoping to hop back to the BWI area where we have plane reservations back to Texas. If we get back early enough we will visit the DC area for a couple days before heading back to Austin.

We too will be going on the Tampa-Barcelona cruise! Howwever, we have made arrangements to board at Charleston. I am reading thru old trip reports to try and figure out where to go from Barceona. The best bet for getting back to the East coast before the schools get out. I am thinking that we might take a Ryan Air or Click-Air flight to somewhere near one of the Space A bases. We were in Rota last winter, so I am thinking about Germany. Italy. or Crete. Don has never been to Italy , so perhaps Naples! Lots of planning to do! We hope to see someof you on the cruise!

You don't have to take a bus all the way from Sevilla--the trains go to Cadiz from which there are frequent buses to Rota. Also, along the way some of the trains may stop at Jerez and a few other towns from which there are local buses to Rota.
I suggest using a Spanish travel agency to book your tickets and advise you on alternative routings. (You pay no more if they do it for you than if you went to the train station yourself and possibly had to struggle with the language. They can also make your seat reservation if that is needed or advisable.)
You can probably find an agency in Barcelona to ticket you, OR perhaps consult (via email) with Paco's agency in Rota that is deservedly popular with American travelers--see their website at
http://www.pacostravel.com/

WE did a Ft. Lauderdale to Barcelona cruise last year and then stayed another week in a timeshare. We drove from Alicante to Rota, turning the car in at Jerez airpport. There is no direct train service from Barcelona to Rota. The Spanish national railway system is a hub-and-spokes sysem with most trains going to/from Madrid. We wanted to drive through the countryside, but the trains are pretty good and the country is not that big that going through Madrid is a problem.

If you are set on taking the train, then the Barcelona-Madrid-Seville route is probably the best way. From Seville there are lots of busses to Rota.

It was a holiday weekend when arrived in Barcelona so the tourist class train tickets from Barcelona to Alicante were sold out. However, first class was great with meals, drinks, charming attendants and a movie. Well worth the cost.

You can travel from Malaga to Cadiz or from Malaga to Sevilla and then from Sevilla to Rota.

For Malaga to Cadiz

To get to Cadiz from Malaga, Portilla (a Spanish bus company) has buses departing at 0645, 1530, and 2000 (4 hours, 19.66 euros) and at 0730, 1200, and 1530 (5.5 hours, 20.12 euros).

The website for Portilla is at
http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/

A timetable for the Portilla buses departing Malaga for Cadiz is at
http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/ima/pdf/malaga-estacion.pdf

To get from Cadiz to Puerto del Santa Maria (the nearest train station to the Rota passenger terminal), the train costs 2.70 euros.

To get from the Puerto del Santa Maria train station to the Rota passenger terminal, a taxi will charge about 20 euros.

Just so you know, Sevilla is closer to Rota. Clickair also flies to Sevilla. Malaga is a little out of the way when getting from Barcelona to the Rota passenger terminal.

John, I looked at the cruise you're going on but decided to do the one from Galveston since it is closer to home. We plan on staying in Barcelona for 3 or 4 days and then going to Rota for a few days. Perhaps we will see you somewhere along the way.

Barry, It is Royal Caribbean Splendour of the Seas. It's 13 nights starting at $499.00 for an inside guarantee. We booked an ocean view guarantee for $640.00 total. If you select the room you want it costs a bit more but might be worth it. Price seems to be the same on Vacations to Go and Dynamic Travel and Cruises. I booked thru Unitedcruises.com to get the frequent flyer miles.

We are also going east on the 21st from Tampa to Barcelona. The cruise is 15 days for $599 aboard Royal Caribbean, Legend of the Seas. We took it a couple of years ago, and assuming the weather is as good as it was then, it's a wonderful trip. Perhaps we'll run into you in Barcelona, or Rota.
