Thanks, Jan. I just sent an e-mail to Cruiseman.com to get more details. Sounds very interesting.

Did the repo cruse 2 years ago and believe me - you didn't miss a thing by not going to Falklands port. It was cold, windy and three blocks long. But the rest of the trip was wonderful. We did the very last cruse of that season.

We've taken part of that itinerary on Holland America's Ryndam--flew to Rio de Janiero where we toured for a day, then on to Montevideo, Buenos Aires, (the planned Falklands port call was disappointingly scrubbed for bad weather), around the Horn (exhilarating!) and through parts of the Straits of Magellan, several more ports plus cruising beautiful "fjords", and finally up to Valparaiso where we got off and stayed a couple of extra days in Santiago. A terrific trip!

But one point that we hadn't truly realized until we actually flew there from and back to Miami (for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours...) is that most points in South America are a WHOLE LOT farther away than Europe is! (Look at your globe--which I should have done in advance!)

Royal Caribbean is offering this 46 dayer on the Mariner of the Seas starting Jan. 4, 2009. It starts in Port Canaveral and ends in LA. There are 3 segments: Port Canaveral to Rio, Rio to Valparaiso, Valparaiso to LA -- around the Horn because this ship does not fit through the canal.

The cruise is not yet offered on the RC website -- you have to call them directly or call a travel agent. You are able to book all 3 segments, or just 1 segment.

Reservations opened yesterday morning and the rooms are going fast. If you book before early September (don't remember the exact date) it is $1350 to hold a room plus you get $500 on board credit. Up until final payment is due, Oct. or Nov. of 2008, you can cancel without penalty. They say that after this promotion they expect to have it offered on their website for much higher prices.

Prices for the entire FL-LA trip start at $4697 for interior, $5597 for oceanview on up to deluxe suite for $13497.

We booked a promenade room last night. I'll print out a complete itinerary if anyone is interested.
