Cherry: Yes, A&K are very $$$$$$! I'm too thrifty (wife says "cheap") to expend my vacation dollars with A&K...my sister paid the bill (along with my two other brothers, sister, mom and spouses). She booked the entire canal boat for a week just for us. It was first class all the way. I'm sure your sister will have a great report to you upon her return. Happy Travels, John |

Phyllis, I've not been on either of those company's river boats, but have taken a combined land-cruise trip (using a large Royal Caribbean cruise ship on which our group was a very small part) in Alaska with GCT that was very well run. (Yes, I have heard that Abercrombie and Kent is excellent, but it's somewhat out of the price range we prefer to pay! Maybe the space-a 'price' has spoiled us? My sister and her husband are leaving today on an A&K African safari, as it happens.) The only river cruises we have taken were (1) from St. Petersburg to Moscow on a Russki-owned boat chartered by the travel agency, and (2) up the Yangtze River with Victoria Cruise line. |

Cherry has you been on Viking before? When we were with Grand Circle, the glass blower they had on board, told us to stay with GCT, and he works both lines. Wonder how folks like Viking. |

I know that some folks here like to visit the Christmas Markets; here's something on them from the latest Vacations to Go e-newsletter: "Some river cruise operators are offering attractive last minute deals that apply to select river cruise departures that remain in 2007, including several Christmas Markets itineraries. For example, Globus is offering savings of $1000 per couple off the cruise-only price of select river cruise departures in Europe, if you book by September 30. And Viking River Cruises is offering 2-for-1 savings on the cruise portion of certain 2007 itineraries in Europe and Russia when you pay in full at the time of booking. Viking is also offering roundtrip air to China from just $299 in combination with select Yangtze River cruises." BTW, on the Vacations to Go website you can click (at the left) on "Military" and see special active/retired military discounts if applicable on a particular cruise.
