When you walk through downtown Helena Arkansas you are walking through the past. I loved it. Garland

Wife and I did the MS/Ohio river June 07. Out of St. Louis, down to Cairo, Il then up the Ohio to Cincinatti. This was the first year they did the Ohio again after several years absence. We generally do the large cruise ships but this was a great cruise even tho somewhat pricey. Food was excellent, staterooms were good. Crew entertainment was good, visiting Big Band groups were mediocre. Many locks on the river made for a new experience. People on shore would wave, daytime town visits were worthwhile. Lots to see or not as you choose. Rocking chairs, swings under a covered porch on the bow made sightseeing a plus. Softdrinks, coffee, ice cream and fresh cookies were available on the front porch most of the time. Evenings were enjoyable watching how they used their searchlights to find river markers.Overall, a good trip. Recommended for those who want a gentle few days in their life.

Lower Mississippi on the American Queen Last March we did the lower Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans. Food was tremendous, Helena Arkansas was a place to be missed. Natchez was great- Fog Horn cotton plantation is a must see, as is the Natchez pagent if it is running. Baton Rouge see the capital building. Oak alley has to be seen to be believed. If the prison rodeo is going on go to it-its worth the trip
Of course the river just keeps on rolling. Some day will do the upper Mississippi also.

I have never done the Mississippi cruises but understand from a friend who has done many that the upper part of the river is the most beautiful.

Has anyone here traveled on any of the "Queen" Mississippi riverboats? If so, what are the pro's and con's? (They seem quite expensive but some of the itineraries from New Orleans up the river are tempting!) I'm interested in all opinions and angles--the best or worst time to go, assorted cabin types, dining, the quality of the various "themed" cruises, ports and shore activities, any unexpected extra costs, etc.
