John, When were you at Galena? I was stationed there in 1966, don't see to many posts from someone who has been stationed there |

My super cheap cruise fell through. The quoted price from ABSea.com ended up being a mistake (about $570/2 persons). It appears that the first leg of the journey, San Diago to Vancouver was the price quoted, and not the continuation on to Alaska. So it was more of a repositioning cruise. I am suprised nobody picked up on this fantastic price that turned out to be an error. Since I have been looking often at prices, anything that ends up under $50/night/person is something to check into! Anyway, it would have been a cool trip and for the price we would have done it. But for the regular "discount" price, we will let it go. Side note, the nice lady at ABSea said generally that military rates are most often given by Carnival, Princess, and Norwegien. Anybody know differently? WAG |

Having spent a tour at Galena AFS (several hundred miles down the Yukon River from Fairbanks, but having almost identical weather patterns), I recall the Yukon didn't "break-up" until May (ie it was still froze-over). After a winter that included several weeks in the minus 50 range, it did feel "warm". I also recall wearing short sleeves at zero (but only when the wind didn't blow!). Ah, memories! Ed, when the temperature gets up to 30 degrees in Fairbanks, folks roll down their windows in their cars and act as if it's mid-summer! I'm not surprised that they were wearing shorts in May. |

John: We too took an Alaska cruise in May arriving in Fairbanks 28 May; very surprised to see folks walking around in shorts/t-shirts. It was never cold, I was in jeans & light wt sweatshirt most of the time. Was in the pool everyday too. We also saw cruisers in long down coats as if they were going to the north pole. Good luck. |

John, our first cruise was in May. It was cool always needed a jacket, but not so cold as to be unpleasant. We didn't wear winter coats, but warm jackets for sure are needed. The one thing I missed that folks talked about were the flowers, they were not out yet, but we had a great time. We were on Holland American and they kept wool throws out on the deck to cover up with if you wanted to just sit out, they also left them on you balcony too. |

I just got a super cheap price quote for book a cruise trip to Alaska in May. I have been looking for an inexpensive trip, and it seems I found one to Alaska that is less than $300/person for 11 days. So is the catch because it is unbearably cold and not worth the time and effort, even though it is a very low price? Avoiding the crowds during the peak period in late Summer may be the best trade-off! WAG |

In Juneau you can get off the ship and the dock is full of tour booths. We did this and had a good tour for 1/2 of what the ship wanted. We used our AAA card and got an even better price than posted. |

Robert: Have cruised twice to Alaska with the HA "dam" ships. Only way to go, IMHO. Vancouver, Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, Seward, Anchorage and R/T Vancouver, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Vancouver. Must do's: Skagway...must ride the Train! Ketchikan...must fly float plane up Misty Fyords. Seward: Nature Museum August is best month to see Alaska (although you will need mesquito repellant!...actually should be past Mesquitos, but into gnat season). Bring camera and binoculars. Spend cruising time in Crow's Nest bar...best views for whales, eagles, porpouses, seals, etc. Use search function above for "Alaska AND Cruise" in "Cruise Info" section Happy Travels, John
