Sounds great. We'e been looking at the Seward facilities. Many years ago, I made Jim take a blue blazer to Italy on the theory that it will take you about anywhere. Never wore it, still reminds me.
Hope we'll get to Alaska. There was our long-planned trip to Rota where we ended up in San Antonio, and July's trip to Lajes where we ended up in Belgium. It's all fun - it's all free!

We have taken the Holland American Volendam from Seward to Vancouver. We took the train(military rate ?$60) from Anchorage to Seward that is within eyeshot to cruise ships. It was a 4 hour trip that arrives about 11 am or so. You can check in your luggage with the cruise and walk around town. We happened to stay over night at the Army lodge and saw more sights including the glacier and a great marine aquarium.I booked the cruise thru Cruise.com military and over 55 rate. Once in Vancouver we took the metro from the pier to the Amtrak station( Previously arranged tickets to Washington State great rates) When we got to Everett we caught the bus to the ferry to Whidbey Island and flew to Jacksonville. As far as packing clothes, my husband does not take a suit jacket with him but does pack a dress shirt and tie which has always been accepted on formal nights. In the evenings he wears slacks and a collared sport or golf shirt. As a reminder HAL allows 2 bottles of wine each to be carried on(do take a cork screw)there are mini frigs in the room and your steward will bring a wine chiller and glasses.

James,

Check out Celebrity Cruises, military and over 55 (if that age applies to you) have some good prices Southbound from Seward to Vancouver.

Wow - thanks for all the great input! Looks like it wouldn't be too complicated to carry the right clothes. Kenneth, if you have found any really good deals, we'd love to know.

It will depend what cruise line you are on. Some do not require men to wear a jacket on casual/informal nights.

Jim & Alice,

You can always rent a tux onboard ship, most cruise lines offer this option. Use the old stand by blue blazer/white shirt/tie for the informal nights. Use the blazer for your Jacket outside? Ken and I were also looking at a Sept cruise out of Alaska but haven't commited to anything yet.

James: have done as much as an 11 day cruise with just a 22" wheely " bag, w/o a tux. With tux I have to have another small bag. Princess ships have free laundry facilities.

When we have taken last-minute cruises and did not have the fancy clothes along, we have done one of the following:

1) If no space was left in the "early" dinner seatings, we said not to even bother assigning us to a "late" table (or else asked for a table for 2 and then just never went), and took ALL our evening meals in the Lido/informal dining facility.

2) If "early" seating was still available, just absented ourselves on "formal nights" after warning our tablemates and waiters we'd be gone.

During the days, you're right that quite casual wear is standard--but bear in mind that by late September it'll be getting cool so long sleeves and long pants will probably be the most comfortable.

For the "semi-formal" evenings women can easily comply with a dressy blouse and tailored slacks; men with a jacket/blazer and open-collar shirt (no tie) plus any slacks (no jeans). That need for a jacket makes it a little harder on a man who's trying to pack light! (However, you could speak in advance with the maitre d' and ask if he'd be turned away without a jacket--chances are some people at other tables might give meaningful looks but he would still be served...)

Jim and I are hoping to go to Elmendorf in Sept. and might try to book a last minute cruise when we get there. We normally pack only a 22 incher each and stay under 30 lbs.
I am concerned about the clothes. What would be need for dinner - dressy, dressy casual, jacket and tie for Jim? What is day time dress - pretty casual?
We don't want to carry more than we really need but wouldn't want to look like slobs either. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Alice
