Before 9/11 there were discussions on the predecessor to this board about how to go around the world, seeing as no space-a passengers are allowed through Diego Garcia. One suggested solution was to fly to Singapore via space-a, get a commercial cruise from there to Athens via the Suez Canal, then take the ferry from there to Crete and continue back to the U.S. from Souda Bay via space-a.
After 9/11 some cruise lines doing this went bankrupt (e.g., Renaissance) and the others changed their route to go around the bottom of Africa so as to avoid places in the Middle East perceived as too dangerous for Americans.
Now we have received a mailing from Holland America that in early 2007 their ship the Amsterdam will set off on a "Grand Voyage" around the world from Fort Lauderdale, on which people can buy segments--so you don't have to spend the full 105 days it would take to go all the way around via sea. The ship will call at Singapore, several Indian ports and others in that area, then go through the Suez Canal to Israel and Athens--where one could get off and start back via Crete as outlined above--before continuing on with several more Mediterranean stops including Malaga--from which it also would be a do-able bus ride to Rota.
It isn't cheap, but it would be one way to do a circumnavigation of the globe, that I think a lot of people here are interested in.
Has anyone seen any such scheduling by other cruise lines?
