Having started this thread let me update it. I checked out both iPhone and several others. After hearing about the new 4G EVO coming out June 4 from Sprint and reading some of the advance reviews that is where I will be heading.

Amy,

My husband and I both have iphones. While my husband was deployed this past winter, I tried to "unlock" his phone. ATT told me they could give me the code for "any other phone, except the iphone." Evidently it is in the contract with Apple, that they do not have to unlock the iphones.

Bob,

The operating system (droid) itself won't determine GSM compatibility.

If the Droid phone is from a GSM carrier (not Sprint or Verizon) and is Tri-band (or better) and unlocked then you'll be able to pop in a SIm overseas (or use the phone overseas with your stateside GSM carrier).

Amy, can you use the Droid overseas on the GSM platform? I just lost my iPhone and will need a new phone and new service also so I'm starting to explore.

I dont have either but have been doing research on both because hubby wants one. The main difference between the iphone and droid (for hubby) is that the droid has a Qwerty keyboard vs the iphone touch keyboard. I would have a look at the howardforums for comparison. Its is a Great resource for cell phones and plans!

I also wanted to add that AT&T has always given me the codes to my phones to unlock them. Just call them up and tell them you are going overseas and they do ti over the phone. I have never had a prob with them giving it to me. They also have a lawsuit pending over this issue because they apparently wouldnt give it to some people.

Jack, I've owned both, I've used a Blackberry (Verizon) for a few years before switching to the iPhone (AT&T) last year. The reason for the switch, I needed wifi for traveling. At that time, the Blackberry didn't come with a wireless connection. I believe it does now.

Having said that, I took my iPhone to Asia last month and was able to make phone calls via Skype, without incurring any phone charges. If and when I make it to Manila next year, I'll have a "technician" unlock it in order to use a non-AT&T sim cards as recommended by John below.

I also like all the neat applications that you can purchase for either free or for less than $5.00.

It's a personal choice, although Verizon's network is better than AT&T's.

My wife has owned an original iPhone since December 2007. I promptly took it to a "specialty store" in Manila and had a "technician" jail-break and unlock it. We've used non-ATT sim cards in it from Guam, Philippines, Vietnam, and Fiji and it has always worked like a charm. She likes it.

Next month when she moves to Hawaii, I am upgrading my cell phone to the Blackberry Storm2. Good global GSM phone that Verizon will unlock for me after we've had service on it for more than 60 days. I've played around with a couple of them and just really like them better than the iPhone. When the new Blackberry OS 6.0 is released later this year, everything will be perfect.

Verizon right now is offering the Blackberry Storm2 for $99 and you get a 2d one for free. Not a bad deal.

Jack, Although I don't know much about either the Blackberry or the Iphone,(my son loves his Iphone) I was at a Verizon store today looking at the AD3700 Global USB Modem. It comes with a preloaded sim card which I may get for home system and take with for a netbook.

While talking to the agent she mentioned the Verizon HTC which she thinks is better the the Iphone, but of course won't work overseas, yet.
By the time we go back to Italy in two years there may be more options for phones, netbooks, etc.

I have had an iphone for a little less than a year. I purchased my iphone from ebay, the owner did not like the touch system. It is not unlocked and I use it on ATT. I do not subscribe to iphone emails or other ATT iphone internet charges, and save $30 per month. I use texting on a per message charge. I paid $300 for the phone and have had zero problems, the phone was like new. I have never owned a phone like this and am well satisified. I don't get the advantage of GPS eather. I am still satisfied with the phone.

Now coming up on end of Blackberry contract. While I do not use that many telcalls I do like the Blackberry for emails. My son loves the iPhone 3G and I like a lot of the aps offered. My complaint on the Blackberry is a shortened battery life. From what I have seen and been told by my son, the iPhone is better. How about some ideas. Also, what about the new Droid Incredible by Verizson. Ideas please.
