I was in Hungary a year and half ago, and the VAT there in Budapest, including local and national VAT was 28%. In Slovenia, 25% and in Croatia, 24%. To be in the EEU, they are required to have a minimum of 15% VAT on everything. Save all your receipts if you are there for a while and make a spreadsheet. If you do, you will get most of it back when you leave, or it will be sent to you at home. Save every receipt for food, cokes, food - everything. Let it be hard for them to figure out what you are not entitled to get back. |

Tony, I'm heading that way next Friday but I too will be back before. However, I plan on heading back both in June and July, so at least I'll be okay for two out of the three trips. Regardless, I hate to see the price for my cup of coffee escalating. |

I'm on my way to Spain right now, and glad I'll be heading back before July. So, I guess I will get hit next time I visit. Walt, not worth the time, unless you're buying heavy stuff. Happy travels! |

Germany is at 20 percent, now Spain. I imagine the others are contemplating similar moves. |

My wife says it's 18 percent presently. Some of it is refundable at the Airport as you leave the country. You have to wait in a line with the proper documents for a refund. Add an extra hour to your normal Airport arrival. I bought a wrist watch and the store manager gave me the papers I needed to collect the VAT. Not worth waiting if you only make small purchases. |

Yesterday's Financial Times reports that the VAT will increase by 2 points on July 1st in Spain. This increase is to forestall similar problems that Greece is now undergoing. |
