Hi Melinda, We spent 4 days in Appenzell this past September & loved the area. We stayed at Gasthaus zum Traube in Appenzell though think that when we return, we'll look for accomodation in Urnasch (http://www.urnaesch-tourismus.ch/d/uebernachten/hotels.php). Most of the accomodations included the "Appenzeller card" if you stay 3 nights or more(http://www.appenzell.ch/en/pages/topical/news_and_tips/?) which included rail/bus transport in Appenzellerland, cable lifts, museums, & other discounts in the region. We loved being able to walk along the river down the valley, lunch at a small village, then hop on a train back. We definitely recommend this as a holiday destination. Please feel free to send me a private message if you'd like more information or pics. |

Many, many years ago while stationed in Germany, we found a great place in Interlaken that rented rooms. We eventually got about 4 families together and rented the whole floor for the winters. It had a kitchen and pots and pans, so we packed or bought food and ate in most of the time. We could drive down in about 4 hours and spend the weekend, the skiers would go off for the day and the ones who didn't could wander the streets and shop. Any time one of the families couldn't go, we made it known our space was available and others in our unit would pay us to use our space. Interlaken is a beautiful place in the mountains, I would love to go back. |

Here's a fun and easy-by-slow way around the Bodensee, tour biking...& zimmer freis. Ride 'til you wish to stop. Stay as long as you wish, then move on. For flexibility, use the Bodensee ferries and or trains in conjunction with biking. http://europeforvisitors.com/germany/bodensee/lake-constance-steamers-and-car-fe rries.htm Other fun trips....bike &zimmer frei the Rhein, Mozel, Danube .... or many other European rivers. |

Its probably not the same as it was in 1981, but one of my favorite serendipity stops for the afternoon/night/morning next day was NEUCHATEL. Stayed in a SMALL hostel type place in the center city. You can google it. For memories, I looked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuch%C3%A2tel Ciao/Wanda |

You're right of coarse, not all in the same area!! Thanks for the input. Do like the Bodensee area and saw the sign to Moos last year so know where it is. Last year (our first visit to Europe) we just drove and stopped each night wherever we were. This year wanted to stay in one place and do day trips. Thanks again. Appreciate all info (even geographical.) |

Northeastern Switzerland? Schaffhausen is northwest? Zurich is central west? Appenzell is central east? Anyway..., here's what has worked for us: "zimmer freie" or rooms for rent/to let. Look in a town or better a dorf (village). Look for the "zimmer freie" signs on the homes. Also, go to the market square near the center of town/village. Look at the town/village map board. Many advertise "zimmer freie" and may have them marked on the map. We've found "zimmer freies" to be convenient, quaint, affordable and full of local color. We've stayed at several on the Bodensee (or Lake Constance in English). Two of our favorites (of the Bodensee), one in Moos, D and the other in Stein am Rhein, CH. [There's maybe a family name, but usually no names...like for hotels or Gasthaus.] Have fun finding and staying at a "zimmer freie". [auf Deutsch (in German) ... it's "zimmer frei".] |

We would like so spend a week in northeastern Switzerland in late September. Any recommendations in the Schaffhausen, Zurich, Appenzell area? Prefer simple lodging in a small town. Any web sites to know about? Thanks for any help out there. |
