Walter, since you don't pay NC income tax on your military retirement, then you must have had five years of creditable service as of August 12, 1989. My post was to caution those that do not meet this requirement that their entire military retirement income will not be exempt from taxes. |

DeeDee I think you better check again. I retired with more than 20 years of active service. I don't pay taxes on my military retirement or Social Security. But I have a private company retirement and I pay dearly. My taxes are prepared by a CPA who's Father is Retired AF and I think she knows the NC Tax Laws. I do not get $8,000.00 deduction from my property taxes and nothing from my taxes on my vehicles, boats or recreational vehicles. Check it, NC is not a cosy as you think. $30.00 to get your yearly inspection. |

Michigan presently dosen't tax any retirement income including IRA or 401 K withdrawals. Other taxes i.e sales, vehicle regestration etc will kill you though. My property taxes arent to bad I guess but I don't have experience with other states so can't really say. We have a 50% homestead exemption plus DAV also get additional benefits. |

Walter - Not all military retirees don't pay income taxes in NC. We checked into it before buying our property in NC. Full exemption for persons with five years of creditable service as of August 12, 1989; otherwise a deduction of up to $ 4,000 ($ 8,000 for joint filers) is allowed (N. C. Gen Stat. § 105-134. 6 and North Carolina Department of Revenue at http: //www. dor. state. nc. us/taxes/individual/benefits. html) |

North Carolina does not tax Social Security or Military retirement pay, but if you have other income, it is very high. I pay every year, highly. All taxes, realestate taxes are usually taxed by the county and city. Personal property taxes on vehicles, boats and recreational vehicles are taxed the same as realestate taxes and not cheap. I did not check on this prior ro moving to NC., but if I had I would have changed my move. Now as you know the situation in every state, we will be getting an increase in everything. Explore before moving to NC. |

Alaska has no state income tax and if you are rated 50% or more disabled by the VA, you get a property tax exemption on the first $150,000 of your primary residence. Also due to the disability rating, residents get a free fishing and hunting license and state park pass. I also got a federal park pass, which anyone with a 30% or more rating is eligible for. |

A DD214 is worth a reduction of $250 on your property taxes in New Jersey. Also no state tax on military pensions. |

If you're not already aware of your State policies, you may want to look into what Tax exemption your State offers to veterans. My area in NY offers a discount on my taxes. Since I am a disabled vet who served during war-time, I get a 25% percent discount on my property taxes. I just completed working a temp gig as a clerk for the Census, and some of the other vets I worked with there had no clue about this, so they've missed out on the break for years. I know it varies from state to state. I did tell my friend about this who's stationed in the D.C. area, and they do no receive any break of this type in that area. |
