In addition to the photocopies Alan mentions, we make a second copy of all that info and leave it with our son. That way if something happens I can call him and he will make all the cancellation calls,,etc.

Also, we travel with three credit cards: I have one which my wife does not, she has one which I do not have, and a third card which we both have. If my wallet or her purse is stolen or lost we still have a card to work with.

Alan and Doug:

Great tips all. Another good place for ideas is Rick Steves' website (ricksteves.com), where he lists a ton of tips and recommendations worth considering. His guide books are also wonderful. The above website is well worth checking out before you go.

Great tips Alan! We are planning our first major trip in several years this summer and to try to ensure there are no problems I've saved all confirmation emails and trip vouchers to a special hotmail email account. Made copies of itineraries and etickets for each suit case and scanned all credit cards, ID cards and passports onto a flash drive that will be secreted away (where all the travelers know it is (including my 14 yr old son).) This may be old news to practiced travelers (I hope to become one when I finally retire!) but figured I'd pass my ideas on.
Happy Travels!

Before we travel we always make a photocopy of all our credit cards and keep that list in a separate place such as a travel bag etc..that way we know the numbers in case we lose any of them. We also record our passport numbers. We also go to the popular catalogs (Magellan, Travel Smith and LL Bean) to see the latest in travel clothes especially those that have anti pick pocketing devices. Unfortunately pick pockets are everywhere especially in train stations. If you carry a backpack try and secure it with some kind of lock as they can be opened and you might not even know it. We also wear money belts and keep our passports in them with them neatly tucked under our shirts. We keep some loose cash in our pockets and try to secure whatever valuables in the hotel safe before we go out although I don't how thoroughly safe that is. Anyway I hope these tips might help make it a more enjoyable trip.
