It looks like SW doesn't fly to either Atlanta or Charlotte so the closest hubs to CHS will be Raleigh/Durham and J'ville...the good news is that AirTran operates out of both of those.

Here's a newspaper article from the Charleston Post & Courier about the new Southwest service.

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2010/may/13/southwestshappylanding/

When I moved to Charleston (CHS) in 2006 there was no low-cost carrier and airline prices were outrageous. Many people, including myself, drove to Columbia, Savannah or Myrtle Beach to catch flights. In some instances, fares were about half as much as flying out of CHS.

Then AirTran came to CHS. Fares immediately dropped to compete with the new service. For example, before AirTran the only air service to Atlanta was on Delta. Price averaged over $300 r/t for this short flight. Once AirTran arrived, I typically could get fares for around $100 r/t. Delta dropped their price to match.

Now AirTran has left CHS and again the only service to Atlanta is on Delta. And guess what, fares are back in the $300 range again. Southwest doesn't fly to Atlanta, so I'm sure those fares will stay overpriced. But I hope the competition to places Southwest does service will lower prices. I just wish Southwest could start the service sooner than next year.

Saw the same thing for GSP (Greenville-Spartanburg) airport. Also was thinking the same thing. Maybe since BWI is a popular destination from Southwest.com, I think their is a chance that we in South Carolina more choices now...
Heard this rumor late last fall/winter, but glad that this might come true. Also remember as of now, Southwest does not charge for the luggage, or unless they change this policy since last time I did a quit check, that will also kill the prices from these airports, all about supply and demand, plus more options.....

Southwest will be adding Charleston to their destinations next year. Where they will fly to from there has not been announced. I would bet BWI, at least. Should help with East Coast space a'ing.
