Awesome article, Ed...thanks for pointing it out to us. My blood boils every time I think about the crimes committed by generations of politicians (Democrats and Republicans alike) who have raided the SS trust fund and never repaid a penny of what they stole from us. I like the 3-prong approach to fixing the pending SS shortfall crisis: 1) Federal government must be required to pay off all the "loans" it gave itself from the trust fund; 2) Increase the withholding an additional 1% right now and keep it there until those loans are fully repaid, then return to the current withholding rate; and 3) Tax all personal income, not just the first $103,000 of it. Those three things, taken together, would put SS back on secure financial footing forever. This approach would allow all of us, rich and poor, to take some responsibility for and ownership of the solution. |
