Gregory, you can find much discussion on here regarding this topic. At Rota NS, Spain, if you are not on orders to Rota (does not matter if AD on leave), or retiree and not employed on base (thus have the second ID card) you cannot use NEX (PX), commissary, Class VI store, gas station. But, can use the NEX Mini Mart located in same bldg with NEX/Commissary. NEX Mini Mart has about anything a space-a person would need. While recently in Spain/Portugal I found the stores off base are great. Especially the El Corte Inglés stores in Spain. They have great food market in basement level, travel/ticket offices upstairs and good place to eat on top floor. Go to Spain every year and I do not miss the NEX (PX) and commissary. Great stores in Portugal too. Retirees can now eat in galley at Rota NS on weekends and holidays. They are considering opening galley to reitees 7 days a week. But, for now only on weekends (all meals). Just left Rota NS and was nice to eat breakfast there instead of the termial. |

Just returned from the UK and visiting Lakenheath and Mildenhall. A retiree that does not live in the UK has no privledges at the gas station, shopette, commissary or exchange. You can stay in the lodging and eat at the dining hall for breakfast and dinner, but not lunch. You can eat in the food court at the exchange and shop in the vendor gift shops. |

Gregory: Depends on the country concerned and the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement in effect for that country). Which countries are you considering. Happy Travels, John |

Regarding extended stays in Europe. As a military retiree, would I have access to anything on base besides lodging and the air terminal, ie, px, banking, post office? |
