A favorite of mine is the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck NY about 1.5 hrs north of WP. www.oldrhinebeckaerodrome.org. Great airshow, static displays and biplane rides.

We were there near July 4th and saw the fireworks over the Hudson. All the summer troops were there and it was really nice.

We stayed in lodging and walked up the hill to the main staging area. It's a strenuous walk but I think you can drive.

Here's a super site for all kinds of Hudson Valley attractions:

http://www.hvnet.com/

Particularly see the many the great estates of the valley at

http://www.hvnet.com/houses/index.htm

I think the 2 best are

Vanderbilt Mansion: http://www.hvnet.com/houses/vanderbilt/index.htm

and

FDR's home at Hyde Park: http://www.nps.gov/hofr/index.htm

The contrast between the two could hardly be greater!

Karen:

1. Cross over the Hudson, take the tram up Mt Beacon...fabulous view.
2. Use as jumping off point for NYC (Train to the City for day trips from Fishkill)
3. Garrison's Landing (the Eastern terminus of the chain across the Hudson from West Point).
4. Jumping off point for Cooperstown (easy drive west).

Happy Travels, John

Definitely do Bear Mountain--a beautiful state park and mountain drive. On the other side of the Hudson from the Academy are some beautiful towns that all run together, including Sleepy Hollow, which I never knew was a real place until I drove through it, and Osining, where the famous Sing Sing prison is located.

Great spot. I was on the faculty at USMA 78 - 81.
Lots of history and beautiful scenery. Worthy of at least a few days!

Is anyone familiar with the Westpoint area, and if so, is the area worth a few days.
We're thinking of camping at their MWR facilities this Summer ($15 per night per tent).
Husband & I have always wanted to see Westpoint Academy & take a tour. Is the surrounding area worth a few days?
