I had forgotten that one exchanges the voucher for the JR Pass at the arrival point. For Misawa, the station at Hachinohe is 10km away, an easy, cheap local train ride. You could exchange it there. It is also the north end of the Bullet train to Tokyo a splendid ride! Enjoy.

Thanks for the clarification, Mike. I was thinking her tourist passport would be good enough. You're right, her entry stamp would be on her no-fee, not her tourist one, so they would know she was actually living there, not visiting. Oh well, at least we can use ours. Thanks for the link! Anne

Anne, you won't have a problem with you or your husband purchasing/using a Japan rail pass if your passport is stamped with a tourist entry stamp. Sorry but your daughter will probably not be so fortunate unless her passport is also so stampted. The Japanese follow regulations and there is little to no leeway. See the following site http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en002.html

Geoffrey recently posted a suggestion in the general space a travel area regarding train travel in Japan. My husband and I are planning a July trip to see our daughter and son-in-law in Atsugi. (I know I know it's not the best time for space-a travel, but I'm a teacher and it's my only opportunity!) Anyhow, my husband and I will purchase a rail pass before leave. We will also purchase one for our daughter, as she has a civilian passport, in addition to the government issued no-fee passport with the SOFA stamp. According to their web-site, the pass can be used only by those in a tourist status. I don't think her status will be questioned as long as she uses her tourist vs no-fee passport. However, my son-in-law does not currently have the tourist passport, just the no-fee, which, I would assume , would identify him as other than a short term tourist. Do you think anyone really cares, or that they will check that closesly? Apparently, you have to show your passport to get it validated once in Japan. If anyone has any experience with the Japan rail pass, I would appreciate them passing it on. No sense getting him a pass if he can't use it. Thank everyone! Anne
