My wife and I returned mid-May from a 1 month trip(non Space A) to Vietnam and Cambodia. I always wanted to go back. We had a great time.

In Saigon(nobody there calls it HCMC) we stayed at a small hotel in the "backpackers" area of the city(Pham Ngu Lao), the Bich Duyen hotel. It is rated at #2 of Saigon hotels on Trip Advisor......

It was spotlessly clean and the service simply amazing--$25/night double. By following the TA reccommendations, we invariably stayed at some great hotels during the entire trip, most in the $25-$45/night range.

We left with only our first four nights hotel res made. Nothing else locked in-just "winged it" and it was EASY. The tourist infrastructure is well developed! Total costs were about $150/day for 30 days including everything, internal flights, hotel, meals, Gifts, etc. We used some FF miles for the trip over.

As far as "security", we had nary an issue nor did we hear of any other travellers having any.

We went from Saigon, Mekong Delta, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap(Angkor Wat), Hanoi,Halong Bay, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An, Saigon and home.

Send me a PM if you need more info......

Lane ,
I use to stay at the Floating Hotel, which is gone now. So, I can't offer advice on lodging, However; a word of advice: If you ride the motorcycle or bicycle rickshaws, be sure to keep a very tight grip on your wife's purse or any packs you might be carrying. 2 guys on a motorcycle will ride alongside of you, and the guy on the back will reach over and grab anything he can and then they tear off down the street. A friend of ours lost her purse this way, in which, she very unwisely, was carrying her passport, airline return ticket, and all her money. It took her several days to get a temporary passport to leave the country. A great waste of time and required much effort. Saigon, as the South Vietnamese call it, to antagonize the northerners, is beautiful and you should see all you can. Take the 10 cent ferry (I think that was the price)across the river just for the fun of crossing the river. Don

My husband and I will be flying into and out of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in the fall for a cruise up the Mekong. Can anyone recommend places for us to stay for 2-3 days in Ho Chi Minh City? (It’s my first time in Asia and his first time since 1960. We usually like to stay in smaller places, either small hotels or B&B’s. We are both "seniors.")
Thanks,
Lane
